Anyone recall beside the 3 ISPs in the 90s, there was another provider with much faster download compare with the 56k dialup? The service cannot surf beyond what they have cached, but it was faster than modem dialup.

During the Dial up era there are a few smaller ISP around but all close or kanna buy over.

Teleview does provide 56k internet while maintain their teleview services.

Dataone ( Asia) also appear short while and Gone.

Another strong player is Swiftech

This are the player in the 56k and ISDN era.

After that we moved to SCV (cable internet) and Singtel Magix (ADSL)

Now we are on fiber stage

Singtel ADSL is the one who come out with wireless router with wifi connection and a simple ADSL Mio TV FOC with just a few channels. 1st generation Smart TV only have Youtube (Free) App. Very simple.

Magix by stinktel?
Yah magic was by Singtel

wiki

DSL-based "SingTel Magix" service were undertaken in March, before being launched in June. Also in June, Singapore Cable Vision commenced trials for its cable modem based services, before being commercially deployed in December 1999. Singtel's ADSL service was subsequently rolled out on a nationwide scale in August 2000.

BBSing during in the 80s/90s any1? The precursor to the Internet :giggle:
yeap, tried a few during the 90s with a 9600bps modem.

then it was pacific internet dialup (competitors was shittel, and cyberway at a later stage) with a 14.4k, then 36k, then 56k (there were two standards, US Robotics vs the rest)
pacific internet had an unlimited plan, but by then the phone bill was no longer unlimited

then SCV cable, then Shittel ADSL. Magix ATM by shittel was too expensive as they charged by data.

cyberway got merge into slowhub and pacific internet got pushed out of consumer business as shittel controlled ADSL, SCV which had merge with Slowhub got cable.

then Fibre...

There are some discussions in the Zym thread.

1) Yes, ISDN was there. Never used though.

More about the early consumer internet access in Singapore. Singtel Magix ATM was the atas one but too expensive. I only used 56k dial-up and SingTel ADSL 256Kbps last time. Then I moved to Starhub Cable Online.

For me is 9.6k/19.2k/28.8k/33.6k -> ISDN -> Cable -> GPON
2 key advantage for ISDN, the connection time is very fast (like under 3 sec) and the phone line works even when you are online, and the cost is only marginally higher than dialup. Too bad most people are not aware of it during the few years that it makes perfect sense.

Never used 56k or xDSL as far as I can remember.
Had to help fix a few ADSL before though.
