But only in the tokyo area, wish to expand to other prefecture this december if got any chance to go for 2 weeks, any recommendations?

Never tried AirBnB before, how was it? i had tried living in a capsule hotel and it turned out fine.

self-exploration usually refers to something that is completely different from wat u have in mind, which i assume is travelling solo =:p:D

if u are travelling solo, japan is great coz it is very safe and there are many accommodations that caters to singles.

u can easily venture out of the cities and visit the countrysides. since u have been to tokyo, maybe this time round can consider places in kansai, such as osaka, kyoto, kobe etc.

airbnb may not be a good idea since u are travelling alone coz they are usually cater for families. it is probably more expensive for single travellers compared to staying in business hotels. furthermore, with the new regulation on airbnb in japan, a lot of the listing have been taken down.

Yep yep! I explore the scenery and stuff. Really worth it. Different from sg.

Uhh great! Thx for the notification. Alot ppl tell me airbnb is cheaper but i dk how to use. Usually i see ppl use it in group travel. I pick hotel , they really have great facilities there.

But i will try advancing other perfectures and try out the High speed rail if possible but i havent visit those tourist spot like jinja in tokyo. Only went to museums and those crowded shopping malls.

Is it worth driving over there? Usually for rural?

driving is going to be expensive since u are travelling alone, so no one to split the cost of car rental.
most places are actually accessible by public transport. so dun really have to drive. i only drive when the place doesnt have public transport, or bus frequency is low, so drive to better manage time

I just came back from a 2 week Japan trip which was planned all by myself.
I visited Tokyo (including Hakone and Nikko), Yokohama, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka(didn't explore much, just a day trip to meet someone).
Was supposed to go to Osaka but the earthquake struck and the JR trains were erractic with delays hence i put it off as i was afraid of that a delay would upset the rest of the plans.

Now no more airbnb in Japan since last month as their government clamp down.
Where u wanna go?
Only Tokyo and its surroundings?
Will ur parents allow you beyond Tokyo?
U can take the Shinkansen and explore other parts too.
For eg u can buy the 7 day JR pass which will take you throughout Japan.

Technically this is incorrect. If anything, the government has formally legalised AirBnB now. Its just that hosts are supposed to register with government and comply with a bunch of rules, so if you see a listing on Airbnb with a licensing number updated (Mxxxxxxxxx) then you shouldn't have any problems with the bookings.

There's really no point in going for Airbnb if you are a solo traveller. If space/privacy is not a huge issue for you and you don't mind shared bathrooms, capsule hotels or hostels are actually great money saving options, cheaper than single rooms in business hotels, and definitely cheaper than Airbnb.

i usually do my japan trips solo.. japan is very easy and safe (other than earthquake).

Hokkaido need to research a bit more on your route as the public transportation not as frequent as compared to other city.

Hokkaido is good.

Can dig my thread out see see. But mine is Sapporo based due to budget. And largely revolves around food.

Still had one hell of an enjoyable time.

i just came back from Solo trip to Kansai- Hokkaido - Kanto region, 24 days + 7 days Taiwan.

I went to 3 national parks, 2 Alpine mountains (Asahi-dake + Tateyama mountain range), saw 3 night sceneries, and 3 flower festivals.

In total i went to 12 places, including cities and townships.

Thanks to all of the help from forumers here which helped me.

Unfortunately the quake struck during my trip, and i had to cancel an accommodation and flight, and lost 450 SGD as a result.

I came back just before the great Kansai flood began, fortunately.

If i had more money and time, i would do Japan again in a heartbeat, preferrably in autumn or spring.

Japan is just that beautiful.

My dream is to one day experience a AHSS's style of Japan trip.

capsule hotels are affordable and less restrictive, but if u wanna live in a home (claustrophobia?), airbnb for solo is also possible. Rates are actually comparable (got mine about 30 sgd just slightly north of ueno-chinese people area). Just need to manage expectations and follow their "rules".
