Wah interesting choice.

But I heard South America mostly quite dangerous countries.

Other than the obvious real dangerous like Colombia Nicaragua Guatemala etc

The “normal” ones like Brazil and Argentina also not very safe especially certain parts.

Maybe for tourist stick to usual areas safe?

I took 3 weeks+ leave and F&E but that was in 2011. Info probably quite outdated since it was so long ago.. Itinerary included Peru and Brazil with a trip to the Argentinian side of the Iguazu Falls and overnight hotel stay within the park. Booked local tours beforehand for the less accessible such as lake titicaca, sillustani, etc in Peru. Otherwise was using local transport throughout the trip like their buses and trains when moving around. Challenging as need to do alot of research and planning beforehand but fun though.

Many tourists at MP as I think it coincided with the 100th year anniversary of the discovery of MP.

Things weren't so complicated then. Probably safer to join tour group nowadays for peace of mind.

Traveling from Singapore to Machu Picchu is a long but incredibly rewarding journey. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know:

1. Getting There: Flights and Onward Travel

  • Flights from Singapore to Cusco (CUZ):There are no direct flights. You'll need to fly from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco, Peru, with at least one or two layovers. Common layover cities include major hubs in the US, Europe, or other parts of South America.
    • Airlines: Airlines like Singapore Airlines (in partnership with others), LATAM, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Avianca, and others offer connecting flights.
    • Flight Duration: The total travel time, including layovers, typically ranges from 30 to 45 hours or more.
    • Cost: Flights can range from S$1,100 to S$5,000+ depending on the airline, booking time, and number of stops. Booking in advance generally yields better prices.
  • From Cusco to Machu Picchu:Once you arrive in Cusco, you have a few main options to reach Machu Picchu (specifically, Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the ruins):
    • Train + Bus (Most Common):This is the most popular and easiest way.
      • Train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes: Take a scenic train ride from Cusco (or nearby stations like Ollantaytambo or Poroy) to Aguas Calientes. PeruRail and Inca Rail are the main operators. The journey offers stunning views of the Sacred Valley.
      • Bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu Entrance: From Aguas Calientes, a short bus ride (approximately 20-30 minutes) takes you up the winding road to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

My sis and her hubby just went last year. I know they went Machu Picchu, Argentina and the Patagonian regions. Didn't ask more than that. Argentina, you need to carry a lot of cash because they don't accept credit cards, even for hotel, so she says.

Spent 2.5 weeks in Peru and Bolivia in 2017. Used this for Peru https://www.peruhop.com/passes/. Good and safe tour then. There was an earthquake at our next destination midway through the tour and they managed it quite professionally and decent. For Bolivia we signed up a local 3d2n tour. Quite decent.
