Anyone using SSHD on notebook?

Recently my notebook HDD got crankly and i intend to replace it with SSHD.
Yes, I would love to use SSD but budget constrain, but I need capacity for movies files download.

Anyone using SSHD for his/her notebook?

Will the bootup time as good as SSD?
If few seconds, I would like to put my notebook into complete shutdown if idle for fixed time (auto saving enabled for my opened documents).

SSHD also aint cheap as well. Doubt boot up time is the same as SSD. If your laptop can support m.2 and sata drives, perhaps can consider getting cheap m.2 ssd for OS and the rest place inside current HDD.

If you've been able to live with HDD speeds up till now, I don't see any reason to spend extra on SSHD unless you make the leap to SSD (with external high capacity storage).

if you only care about boot time, get hdd. partition into c, d drive and F drive. All your downloads keep temporarily in D drive. If you confirm will keep, then keep in F drive.That will prevent fragmentation.

also hibernate instead of shutdown. Or just put in sleep mode.

My previous laptop came with a SSHD, I think 1TB + 32GB or something like that. It was slightly faster, not comparable to a SSD though (in terms of real world performance and "feel").

A better setup would be SSD on your laptop, USB3 external HDD.

Was helping my mother upgrade her hdd on laptop. Same constraints. Only 1 sata slot. Went for a firecuda 2tb sshd during 12.12 sales. Did some research that showed that it produces a marked improvement over normal hdd after a few boots. Not ssd level but still much faster than normal hdd.

My mother said that it's faster.

SSHD does not act like a SSD, basically the SSD part acts like a cache.
If you shutdown and startup the laptop many times, it will
start to "remember" than later on startup will be faster.
Take note the HDD still spins at 5400rpm so normal write/read
is still the same as standard 5400rpm.
Depending on type of notebook, maybe you want to consider
HGST 2.5" 7200rpm HDD.
They are fast but the notebook can heat up quite a fair bit.
That is why most laptop came with 5400rpm than 7200rpm.

SSD will make the rig faster for sure but it is a halfway kind of solution. I normally will not recommend it unless the laptop only comes with a Sata connector and you need the space. Essentially, it will improve OS and commonly used apps boot time as long as the data stay cache within the Nand limit.

SSD is a decent investment for those that needs capacity yet not willing to shell out for an SSD

Don't expect SSHD bootup time to be as good as SSD, and consistent as well. I installed it with Windows 10 and it will be very slow during reboot, and after windows update. Personally I will try to avoid SSHD with windows. Linux should be working very well with it.
