Contemplating to add the AirPort Extreme to my existing network. Can I set it up as access point and connect it to my modem/router via Ethernet?

What's the reason for this addition? Yes access point or roaming network is the preferred setup.

Thanks for the info. Reason is the existing equipment provided by singtel is limited in its wifi coverage. Heard that the AirPort Extreme has very strong signal. As I am still on adsl I have to make use of the existing modem/router as the front end.

since you are still on ADSL, using airport extreme might be a little overkill as its a wireless AC router/access point. the cost to function ratio for your case is extremely steep, meaning its too expensive for its purpose.

If your main objective is to increase coverage, perhaps you might wanna explore linksys or asus access points.

but of course, its a personal preference.

Thanks for pointing that out renfred89. I was also contemplating switching to a fibre in the near future. So the AirPort Extreme will come in handy should I decide to switch. You are right to suggest cheaper options for my current setup. Will also take a look at those.

Airport Express can be configured as an access point however the price is still on the high side.

It's actually good as an access point because of the limited LAN port, at least supports wireless N

I would rather buy 2 of airport Express and set it up as access point then buying 1 Airport Extreme because of the price difference and more freedom to concentrate on access point location.

Though the Airport Extreme runs on wireless AC, i think 2 times wireless N access point still gives better coverage and performance.
