From my understanding, you're automatically entitled to Apple's education pricings as long as you are a student or staff of any local Universities, Polytechnics or ITE institution. Your friend immediately qualifies since he should already be considered a student.

and compare it to the prices offered by SP's notebook vendors when the notebook roadshow commences at the start of the semester, and see which package/pricing your friend prefers. Apple's products normally ship out in 24 hours and you can receive them in 3 days or so. He/she should be able to do without the laptop for the first 3 days.
While Apple Care is something you should theoretically have, it is also something that you can do fine without (at your own risk). My 2009 13" MacBook Pro is still working fine till date, except for the degradation in performance and battery issues that would not have been covered in the warranty anyway.
