You have to enable to the "preview" under iphone WhatsApp setting to see the actual msg on the watch.

Thanks man! This is getting confusing... There's Apps settings within iPhone settings, there's app settings in watch app (which whatsapp doesn't have) and settings within the app itself. And this particular setting in within the app and not well described.
