Applying to another UNI again

Hi! Just wondering what would cause one to lose their placing in the university they accepted previously?

Accepted SMU last year and got offered a placing but I'm considering reapplying to NUS this year. Will I lose my slot if I were to do so? If not, what causes one to lose their slot in the previously accepted uni?
