i also had a dual cpu board with xp1700s to mp1700s via pencil. sold it off already. those were cool. the days of duron 600@1000! we didn't even need big aftermarket coolers during those days.

oc isn't so fun these days, ever since fsb overclocking became difficult since sandy bridge.

every generation, i would take a chip to clock. i had a celeron D 2.4ghz@3.8ghz, a coppermine 566@850. i used to be a duron/celeron fan for years, but i think they no longer afford the same performance with overclocks as they used to

i stopped for many years, but recently just got a 3570k a few months back.
chip runs as my main rig at 5ghz on 1.29v, but hits almost 80 degs on stress tests. very hot!

frankly, i can't see much difference, and the extra S$100+ for the aftermarket cooler, extra S$50+ for the Z77 motherboard kinda negates the value that mainstream overclocking used to provide

Right now, i think the most 'extreme' thing you can do is delid-ing intel cpu.

That's why we have technology like dynamic clocking and power gating which can still work when overclocked.

When idle, clockspeeds are dropped and IC is power gated such that power consumption is indistinguishable from that of a non-oc system.

When loaded, everything ramps up in milliseconds and you get the POWEEERRRRRRR for that extra fps.

Best of both worlds really.

liquid nitro is kinda temporary lah. have to keep on pouring LN over a chip for some clock number increase. can't use it for long to play games or do chess matches or video rendering mah.

i tend to be a late adopter and switch cpus 1 gen after it comes out
my own experience is that the ivy bridge 3570k is the best chip to oc currently, whatever other people tell you about sandy bridge being better.

i had 3 2500ks, best ever clocker was 4.8ghz at something like 1.45v on AIO watercooling. one hit 4.7 and the other was a stinker at 4.5 which wouldn't go higher at that voltage.

have 2 3570ks, one boots 4.6ghz windows on stock volts 1.05v(never tested for stability, but runs games and daily stuff perfect without crashing) and another smacks 5ghz on a fat aircooler on 1.3v prime stable around 80 plus degs 6H. no IBT done though.

as the haswell process matures, i'm sure many processors will be able to hit 5ghz.
i'll get 1 then.

These recent gen Intel processors are much old and hagged enough to be able to hit those levels. It is only the Intel 'special' BB cream applied are making them too spicy and horrible to push the limit...
