Hi HH,

I’ve graduated last year and am currently 4 months into my first job. I took up this job mainly because I was still unsure of what I want to pursue at that time. However I feel that there’s not enough challenge/responsibilities in this job and my skills couldn’t be put to the best use. I also don’t see much career progression in the long run.

I recently came across a job posting about a position in an industry that I’m interested to try. I know I would be labelled a job hopper to my prospective employers/interviewers but I’m not sure if the reasons I stated are valid enough for them. Please advise?

1) Nobody really cares how long you stay in your first job if your 2nd, 3rd, 4th jobs etc are stable
2) Challenges will usually only be given to people who have proven that they are excellent (not just good) in what they are supposed to do. It is what differentiates good managers and good executives.

Have you spoken to your current manager on a clear career path? He will probably have more experience than you and knows the proper path should you choose to stay in this industry

Just ask tell them upfront what you are expecting.

Be clear in what is your
1) Minimum salary (where if you get offered below this salary, you will reject the offer)
2) Desired salary

Then ask for something in the middle or slightly higher.

So would it be advisable to negotiate the pay by $1-200 and what reason should I give if asked why I asked for more?

Well no harm trying.

Reason? Can say anything really.

One common reason which often many people say is they have an offer from another company which is slightly higher (not that you should use this excuse, just that it is commonly used in the market)

Depends on your experience level and your industry and actual job

Different companies focus on different industries/experience levels

HH,
I encountered an MNC that does not pay variable bonuses, only 1 mth AWS...so effectively its a 13mths package. Is it reasonable to ask for higher basic salary? if yes, how much more?

As I'm seeking out for a new job, how do you think i can tackle the question of why do i leave my previous job , in order for me no to leave an bad impression on the interviewer. TIA.

Hi, I like to seek your advise on renumeration issues. I recently had a phone screening interview, 1st interview, with the HR of an overseas organisation of US origin if it matters. The HR lady had enquired about the salary range i was thinking off, I had gave an initial rough figure, not range, and as the interview progresses with more details about the job scope, i felt like i should have asked for more. I have yet to talk to the hiring manager so is it still possible to neogiate for a higher number seeing that i have yet had the chance to delve into the specifics of the role?

Your experience is very generic.

Any MNC HH company is fine.

No. Because in most companies the VB is also not guaranteed.

Even if you join a company that pays you lower with VB (but lets say in bad years your VB is 0 you will also llst)

And why did you leave the program?

If it is only one month might as well not put it in your cv.

Firstly, all companies work on a budget.

You must often ask how much is their budget because, if your new asking salary is more than their budget, then they will not be able to afford you.

It could be a case that your salary you provided is within their budget, but your new salary is not, thus wasting everyone's time.

But it is possible to ask for more, just that in most cases, you should not ask for a lot more. (lets say instead of 20% you quote 40% which is a significant difference, instead you might want to quote maybe 25%, all this of cos is subjected to how much you are currently on, because 50% of a 1.5k salary is different from 10% of a 15k salary)

HH,

My company guarantees a minimum 2 months variable bonus. Would potential employers give a **** about this ? Since it is not listed as AWS. Or should i just factor this into my basic.

Hi, i had more than 7 yrs of experience in info security and BCM. Am in between jobs for about 1.5yrs. Am thinking of a career change to HR field. Would that be possible, since I've got no experience and is already in the mid-30s? I'm willing to take a pay cut and start low.

Hi, i am a accounting undergrad. Would liek to ask:
1. Is it a must to have big 4 experience?
2. what are the usual routes for a accounting grad?
3. What are the areas to look out for when choosing a job and the company?
4. Any advice for a fresh grad?

Apologies if it seem too general. Thanks much

There is no such thing as guaranteed 2 months variable bonus. Simply by the fact that if the company goes into financial trouble or the economy goes bad you will get zero variable bonus.

Whereas AWS or guaranteed bonus means even if the company in financial trouble, they must pay you the bonus

So yes, potential employers don't give 2 hoots about it.

Why make the change? better to have more interaction with people working in the job scope first or take some courses to find out more about what the job entails.

HR is very broad, it covers payroll, recruitment, learning and development, compensation and benefits, etc etc.

Big companies segregate the different functions, but small companies you need to do everything.

1) No. But it is good to have. You must also see which area of accounting you want to do. For example if you want to do things like fund accounting, then don't bother going big 4.
2) Most people either go big 4, or to a financial institution, or to a corporate entity doing all areas of accounting (generalist)
3) Job scope, salary, individual or team member role, location, etc.
4) Don't take the first job that offers you the role. Interview for as many places as possible then compare them.
