ASRock Deskmini 110W

Hi guys,

I've been lurking in this sub-forum for a while. I have been using a i3 NUC as my HTPC but it has been getting a bit laggy lately specially if I stream shows to other TVs.

I want to upgrade and has been eyeing Intel's Skull Canyon for a while. Unfortunately, the price with other essential components is really too high for me to bear.

I searched around and chanced upon ASRock Deskmini 110W. It's small (although bigger than a NUC), takes desktop CPU and up-gradable. I couldn't find one in SG so I bought it from ebay.

I added a piece of 8GB ram. Total cost is less than half of skull canyon! :D

I bought the deskmini for 161 USD.
wifi and power brick is included
I got the i7 for S$461 and Ram for S$75

You need to buy the CPU, RAM and hdd.

So the total cost kinda depends on the specs you want

Ok lah, USD$161 for a mobo w/PSU + mobo

Only problem is you can't reuse the case + PSU

mITX is where I draw my limit for parts reusability

because of the limited space, asrock cram the m.2 ssd slot on top of the m.2 wifi + bt module slot. this in my opinion, is a bad design, because the hot wifi + bt module would eventually fry the m.2 ssd :D

and you are missing a m.2 ssd :D

and you are missing a m.2 ssd :D

A 6000 series Intel mobile WiFi module measures 1-2 watts of average power consumption. This asrock probably is probably 7000 or 8000 series. How much heat can it produce?

Don't think comparing heat output to something like a wifi router or modem with a CPU, RAM, flash, WiFi radio (close to a mini computer) in it will be an accurate assesment of heat output.

try it and when your windows OS on the m.2 ssd starts to misbehave, you will know what i mean :D

and i wasnt even comparing heat output to something like a wifi router or modem ....................

Ok maybe I misread you. But you know when you can feel and touch a mobile WiFi chipset's IHS with that sticker (even on an older mPCIe than M.2 version) on a laptop that's no different from the chassis ambients, the heat output is low. ;)

And actually NAND cells have better endurance when programmed at higher temperatures. Retains data better at low temperatures. This is just one of the many articles pointing this out.

i wish you would solve my problem. i am currently using a usb wireless to circumvent the heat issue :D

now this is a good design layout as all the heated components are thermodynamically spaced out :D
