I do have data in long term storage in the form of LTO tapes. RAID is for data for the last 3 years but accessed infrequently


So 2TB about 1 day... must pray the remaining 3 disks can zng leh. Otherwise really become very problematic.

The RAID controller really got so slow, until like 20MB/s meh? Even if I leave it idling in the background? I was expecting rebuild speeds to be faster at 80 - 100MB/s , which is quite achievable with 7.2krpm drives. Even if I consider the parity overhead, having the speed reduced by 80% is quite ludicrous...

Problem with tape is you never know the condition when you try to restore. Tape can become bad due to storage condition. Drive technology can be already sunset after some years etc.

I am considering going on a 4 x 2TB RAID 5 setup on a NETGEAR NAS.


Can anyone share their experience from a failed disk in RAID 5 and subsequent rebuilds? How long did the rebuild time take?

Another thing you have to consider is not all raid 5 are equal in market. Eg. If the hardware logic went bad and it is some years after end of service. It does not means you transfer all disk to another machine and you can read back the data.

Also agree on the LTO tape point. Though I have a airtight cabinet for these.


My tape drive already 2 generations behind the current one

Don't feel bad about LTO, my office is still using LTO-5 for our backup. We have one shelf of tapes

Zfs is annoying due to the need for ecc rams and they cost alot. It really depends on what ts using this raid for.

just curious, do you all store your tapes in their tape boxes and subsequently in another box or do you all just leave it open stacked nicely?

They are stored in the server room, 24x7 aircon running 13 degree C. Good for me to acclimatise before going to cold countries
We put them back inside their original box, but labeled them based on the recording period. Currently cycling through tapes from 2012 for overwriting

you may use zfs without ecc ram.

the much dreaded scrub of death is an overblown issue. if your data is corrupted due to your bad non-ecc ram, then it is bad whether you are using zfs or not.

and likewise, ecc ram is always good to have whether you are using zfs or not

Raid don't support that. Usually only pooled storage will support that. Something like Windows s2d/storage spaces, snapraid + mergerfs etc. There's also a Windows version of mergerfs which I can't recall ATM.

Why not? I'm using pooled storage for my nas media library with 10tb worth of movies/shows/music.

Much easier to manage and I can easily add additional hdd of any capacity at anytime.

if really want to play with raid 5 or 6 or 50 or 60

then you really need EMC VNX storage solution
