Thinking of getting the RT-BE92u as the mesh node with the main as BE86U. is that ok or it should be swopped around ?

somehow i cant get my current ax86u 2.5g wan port as the mesh node to work. that port on ax86u always defaults to 100mbps. its only when i put it to the normal wan 1g port then its back to normal. using a cat 6 cable.

any thoughts ?

No idea of your RT-AX86U issue. My RT-AX86U is happily running in AP mode with the 2.5G port connected to the main OpenWRT router. But I am not using AImesh myself.

On the other hand, I do not think it is a good idea to use RT-BE92U (triband, weak CPU) as a mesh node to the RT-BE86U (dual band, strong CPU). A cheaper ZenWiFi BD4 or RT-BE58U may be good enough as a replacement for your old RT-AX86U.

I use Asus RT-AX86U Pro, if want to upgrade to wifi 7, any recommendation?
1 Router is enough to cover my whole house, so no need mesh.

I tested a unit of Asus ZenWifi XD 6, also can cover 1 whole house. so I'm thinking a unit of BT10, but read xiaofan mention lower end cpu. Does it really impact?

Edit: currently using m1 2.5gbps plan.

If your device count is low, then I believe not much impact.
But to future proof, better to get better ones.

Better to get more appropriate mesh solution for such a large flat. Asus AImesh may not be the right solution.

Do you have LAN ports in every floor? Within each floor, do you have LAN ports in some rooms?

What is your budget?

You have not mentioned the budget.

Anyway, here are my two recommendations, both not cheap.

Option 1 --> Netgear Orbi from Netgear Singapore, free online consulation and paid installation sevice (may have discount depending on the mesh solution you buy).
https://netgearstore.sg/pages/installation-support

Option 2 --> Ubiquiti Unifi system, not an expert but you can ask in this thread.

The UniFi access points route could be a more flexible/versatility option. However, you may need some networking knowledge.

Going with a consumer mesh system like Netgear would be a good alternative and it is very easy to setup as compared to UniFi. But, it comes with a cost. If cost is a concern, you can consider other consumer ones such as from Asus, TP-Link, etc.

Both systems allow wifi or wired backhaul. Like what xiaofan mentions, these are generally 2 brand recommendations as well.

Asus Merlin FW support (Take note TUF-AX6000 and TUF-AX4200 will not be supported by Merlin but they are supported by OpenWRT)

Asus WiFi 7 routers are using 3006 FW series.

Those WiFi 6/6E routers with Broadcom BCM4912 CPU have been upgraded to 3006 series FW.

Those with BCM4908 or lower CPU will be stuck at 3004 version.

Newbie to network. Pls excuse me for some basic and nerd questions.

Staying in hdb exec. Using an Asus AX55 in the living room. Signal in bedroom is bad.

Thinking of the following options:

1. Replace the AX55 with an AX86U. This option would allow me to have the old AX55 available for meshing if needed.

2. Get another AX55 and mesh it with my existing AX55. Possible?

Understand that I can try repositioning my AX55 but due to cabilng and power point issues, I prefer upgrading the router or meshing.

I have tried wifi extenders. Result is no good.

Any advice appreciated. TQ

On Extenders/Repeaters. Positioning is very important. If you place the extender at a blind spot or not in the line of sight of the wireless router, signals would definately be reduced. The other important thing is even if you have managed to position it properly, a higher end repeater would actually broadcast a new WiFi on a different antenna. This helps improve the speed and reliability.

If you want to use 1 WiFi unit, the placement is very important. It needs to be centralised with minimal obstruction from objects/furniture/interferences. It is very largely dependent on housing layout on whether this is also possible. For my house, they place the storeroom ("bomb shelter") in the middle of the house. As a result, there is no way to have strong WiFI signals in the entire house.

If no you do not prefer to do cabling/wiring, yes, the better option is to do extending/repeating (i.e. "meshing" is just another marketing term"). But, you need to strategically place the units. And as I mention above, there are also low end and high end equipment; and it does make a difference.
