Newest Firmware Update Breaks My Compass!

To everyone who is considering to upgrade their firmware to 10.4.17.7, know this:

The firmware will break your phone's compass function!

Actually, the Padfone's compass was already broken for a long time before.

(Don't believe me? If you still have firmware before 10.4.16.8, try this: Turn on Google Maps, then look at where your icon is pointing. I guarantee you that it is completely inaccurate (points North when you are facing South, etc.))

However, the last firmware 10.4.16.8 fixed the problem. When I took my Padfone 2 in to the Service Center, they wiped my phone and flashed this firmware (in the process, they also converted the SKU from Starhub to WWE...so no more Starhub bloatware nonsense!)

Then Asus releases the newest firmware, and the compass is broken. AGAIN!

Is there such a thing as compass in the phone? Isn't it just the GPS emulating a compass function?

Most of us are living in a concrete jungle you can tell the directions from the positions of the buildings and the sun. If GPS works, compass is not so relevant isn't it.

Anyway, I got OTA update of the .17.7 firmware, that's cool. I didn't even get OTA from my previous Samsung S2.

Asus is making progress.

Most phones have a magnet to detect the phone's direction (digital compass), so for navigational apps, you should be able to rotate your phone and see which direction its facing.

I guess, if you're good with directions then it's not important to you..
and yes, i would agree that it's rarely "crucial".

However it's often useful..
eg:
- when you're walking (instead of for eg: driving) you might want to know which direction to walk to instead of randomly walking towards a direction first just to find out...
- when you're using other location sensitive apps (for eg ingress), compass is often useful..

and yeah padfone's compass has always had issues here and there.. :s8:

Yes there is. Nope, GPS emulation of it has issues, and just isn't good enough.

It's still very relevant. Just a day or two ago, saw an auntie use her phone compass to see which direction good for her fengshui... :)

Anyone have problem receiving prompt to upgrade their padfone 2 firmware? I have not been receiving any firmware update ever since I collected my padfone 2 from the service centre in May.

Check your build number...
if you have anything other than the STARHUB version (some people say they got theirs changed to WWE version), you need to:
1. download the update from asus padfone 2 support website
2. extract it
3. put the extracted .zip file in your phone
4. reboot your phone to recovery
5. install from zip

I've turned off my auto backup feature for pictures. I noticed that there is this folder called Auto Backup in Gallery. Tried to delete the pictures under this Auto Backup folder/album but no delete option. Any idea how do I go about deleting those...
Thanx...

open google maps, and tap the find location button twice, it will point to where ur phone is facing..

in tablet mode, there is a compass window available by default..
