Setting up a new home wifi system and want to reuse my current RT-AC88U.

Layout of the place is as follows:
-fiber point and 5-point data patch panel located in the DB by the front door. The patch panel provides wired lan points to the 2 bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen.
-I want to set up an access point in my living room (connected to the RT-AC88U in the DB via LAN)
-can I use any models of Asus routers for this? I have an older RT-AC87U, can I use it as an access point?

You can use any wireless router and configure them as an access point, or get a dedicated access point.

RT-AC87U can still be used, but it does not come with the AiMesh function (which makes the setup and configuration much easier). You can still configure it with the same SSID and turn on smart roaming. You would just need to play around the antenna power and channels to get the optimum.

Thanks. No point buying a new serving when I have the 87u sitting around unused. Will try that and see!

You should put the 87U in the DB and just use it as a router and connect the 88U to the LAN port of the 87U and use it as an access point. The 88U has better wifi functionality than the 87.

the ac87u will overheat and create another problem for TS if he place it in DB box.

on top of that, AC88 processor is better so it makes more sense for ac88u to be in DB box.

anyways TS, i recommend u put a cpu cooler below ur ac87u as it is a known problem for it to overheat..

Thanks. I have the 88u on a CPU cooler (was bought for the 87u). Does the 88u need a cooler? Don’t really want to buy another one if I don’t have to

The only issue is I gotta translate the GUI for the 87u to English as I go along cos I bought it from Japan many years ago and not able to change language to English lol

All I need to do is set the mode to access point right? No other configurations necessary?

Tried setting up the 87u earlier. I did a reset (press red button at the back) then logged in with admin/admin. It straightaway asked me to change default password, then went into a screen asking me to configure SSID, which I changed to something like ASUS-AP1

Then it restarted and i connected to the Asus-AP1 SSID with my iPad. I can surf the internet, but can’t login into the 87’s config page.. tried the password i changed to earlier, also admin/admin but still cannot. But yet I’m able to surf the net on the SSID (didn’t do any configuration to AP etc.)

to do that u can always go to your main router to find out what is the new ip address of your ac87u. and from there u can access to it main page by the ip address.

Managed to bypass the Japanese language by downloading the Asus Router iOS app :)

Flashed firmware to the latest and changed the mode of operation to AP. Named the SSID to the same as my router and will try it out for now.

Which Asus router would make a good match (also value wise) if I want to purchase one to match the 88u for use as an access[pint using AImesh? The 87doesnt support the AI mesh
