As in all computers, programming can be done on it. Question is how fast do you want things to move ? Less of asking for the fastest supercomputer in the world, there will always be faster computers out there than what you have.

If you are just learning how to program, I think any modern system is good enough. It's all up to your expectation.

Here might be what you want to know Intel Core i5 4200U vs M 5Y10

Extra power can always come from computers outside your laptop. Eg: A temporary cloud node

intel, being the complacent, monopolistic idiot in what is for now largely a one chip market, is making microscopic advancements in each product cycle. which by the way also tightens every single year.

and now we're at a point where there's literally no improvement, sans the fan being gone, which is really no big deal.

For student experimenting with R programming and VBA, should be OK. Usually the sample test dataset being processed is quite small and not real-world production dataset going into gigabytes and terabytes.

VBA requirements are quite modest. If your computer can run MS Office, it should run fine, even a Intel dual core CPU won't choke or stutter.

And for beginner programmers, most do not have the skills or knowledge to do multi-core programming to take advantage of all the CPU can offer, be it 4 or 8 cores. They are probably stuck with a single-threaded program on a single core. :s13:

And I am one of them. :o
