For me, I will not update the firmware immediately once new one released.

I will wait for at least 1 week, see no feedback or complains about the new firmware then update.

So I never set to auto update.

It is better to kiasi for such cases instead of bricking the unit (same for my phones)

I'm more kiasi.

I think I will wait 1-2 months.

Unless its a security and critical update.

Just an update. I screwed up. I resetted my router as I wanted to upgrade the firmware not knowing what trouble beholds me.

Everything went bonkers. I lost both lan and wifi connections.
I resetted the router several times to gain access to Lan connections intermittently.

I gave up and called M1 to arrange technician to come down ( SGD 33 ) wait 1 day only.

He came down and told me not to use webpage to access the new Asus ZenWifi BT10. But use the app instead. I told him I forgot the passwords and all. He told me its all under the main router - which I used, but I used the wifi login details rather that the actual login details ( both are listed under, just next to each other ).

The thing that I didnt try to do was ... to switch off and on the ONT ( the main M1 modem ) and leave it off for I think at least 5 minutes? Or maybe 10 minutes?

He did it once but we still couldnt connect. He tried it again but left it off for much longer, than it finally connected.

But lesson learnt. I no longer try to upgrade any firmware myself in future. I will let the app do it for me.

?? How you upgrade firmware until lost connection? Resetting router also should not have resulted in what you experienced

Errrr....actually yes. Factory resetting a router does exactly that. It reverts settings to default, the same what would happend if you reseted your phone. Everything disappears unless you have a backup ( local or cloud ) to restore your settings.

Next time , just click on check firmware and let it upgrade by itself. After it's done, it will auto reboot by itself, Only factory reset if it is required.

Got 2 issues here.

You lost password
You wanted to upgrade firmware so you factory reset

Factory reset has to be done to fix 1st issue. If it's an old router with stable FW, I will just ignore.

For 2nd issue, don't need to factory reset before upgrading FW. Just back up settings.

PS: The $33 fee is reasonable actually. You can save this fee if you had called Asus. Their customer support is very helpful. I called twice before.

I interpreted lost connection as he couldn't have any connection to the router anymore i.e bricked, not that he could not connect to the wifi network anymore. But ok I guess I overinterpreted since he managed to get it working again in the end

Yah, it's quite annoying (and harrowing?) that it sometimes takes a few tries to establish the WAN connection after a factory reset.
Happened to me too - but I think wasn't as worried coz there was an early review video which I watched that mentioned that he had to factory reset a few times (or was it restart a few times? can't remember) for things to work.

EDIT: Anyway, didn't bother with reset with the latest update although it was recommended to do so to "activate every new security adjustment" from the previous update.

When upgrading any firmware of a network appliance, always read the change log first. If it is just a new feature you do not need or a bug on one of the function which do not affect you, you can choose not to update. Unless it is critical security update, most of the time it is fine not to upgrade if your current firmware is working fine for you. Don't be tempted to upgrade to the latest immediately.

Fact is, you will read more forumers/users with issue of bricking their network appliances or experience network connection issues when they upgrade their firmware even if it is working fine for them than those who don't.

With the software developer (esp home consumer products) getting lazier and less time to test their firmware. Upgrading firmware just becomes a routine "cross your fingers and pray it will come back online" experience every time. Wait and see approach is still a wiser choice for most home network appliances.

After FW update, if want to do a reset, you can try to disconnect the WAN connection first (under internet status -> internet connection -> OFF).

Then reset the unit.

Is the latest firmware for BT10 now stable? Previously have a few complaints (2024) online about how wifi always disconnect.

I have a choice between
1. a set of 2 BT10 or
2. one Asus GT-BE98U or
3. a pair of Asus GT-BE92U (AiMesh) for 4rm HDB (ONT inside DB Box at the corner).

Not sure if the GT-BE98U if left inside the DB box can reach the whole house? Or better stick to mesh?

If it is mesh layout, I put the main node in DB box and use wired backhaul so
ONT -> [WAN] Node #1 in DB Box [LAN] -> Port X (starting in DB Box, ending at study) -> [WAN] Node #2 in study [LAN] -> MacBook in study.

I can't somehow ONT -> Port X (starting in DB Box, ending at study) -> [WAN] GT-BE98U [LAN] -> Macbook right?

Yes, main node in db box, second one in study works. You can also do the latter where you have the gt-be98 on the outside, just that you lose the wired connections in other rooms.

1. If I only require ethernet connections at the study, then maybe BE98 is a better option? Since that will be in the study and a more central location and I can use the 10Gbps LAN port for my Macbook

2. If instead I require more ethernet connection e.g. at living room for Smart TV (yet to decide if we are getting one), then BT10 will be better (where 1 node in DB box, 1 node in Study)?
I can connect Node #1 in DB [LAN2] -> Port D_ (starting in DB Box, ending in living room) -> Smart TV right

Any idea if dual BE92U is better setting up a AIMesh instead?

1. Yes
2. Yes

BE92U only have a single 10gbps port, so you will miss out on 10gbps connection for your macbook

Just noticed that the primary node LED is red again since the latest firmware update several days ago...
Anyway, will leave it alone - based on experience, it will go white on its own eventually.

Red means no internet connection.

Could be ISP ?

My 1x BT10 and 1x XD6 combination so far seems stable with latest FW. I opt for XD6 as BT10 is too bulky.

Now the setup is much more stable than the older FW when I started smart home in late August.

Yes, red means no internet connectivity. But it’s working fine, thought the latest firmware might have fixed this led glitch.

The router devices list is broken.

Any way to check which node my device is connected to ?

Using the app? In the Devices tab, it groups the devices under the respective BT10 node.
Using the web? In the AiMesh section, click the BT10 node to show the connected Clients.

Just noticed that in the web AiMesh section, seems to be missing several devices, e.g. my wired Apple TV.
But it does who up in the web Network Map Clients "View List".
So there's probably still some bugs to be ironed out.
