Hi, as above. Went for servicing, was told that I need to do the ATF flushing, something I do not see in my car's manual.

Is it really required?

My mazda3 is on yrs 7 and mileage is 165KKM now, the engine is so far so good, never give any problem.

I changed its ATF oil once on yrs 6th only, what I saw at the pan when taken out was, other than the ATF oil was darker than new oil, the thick dirt that stick at the bottom of the pan was quick a lot.

So although Mazda car manual didn't state to change AFT oil, I will recommend to change it once every few years, but not to the extreme of every 40KKM like someone may recommend.

For me, I plan nomore AFT oil change on my Mz3, unless I'm intend to renew COE by end of yr 10. That's me.

Simple draining of ATF typically only drains a fraction of all the ATF that is in the entire transmission system.

Hi guys, its not about changing. I change my ATF oil every 30,000km as well. But the mechanic suggested flushing the ATF and replacing the ATF. I was told that this needs around 9litres of ATF oil rather than the usual 3 litres, so I am asking if there are anyone who does this.

It is the first time I heard about flushing atf though...

Usually about half. So it is more economical to drains, then redo again 10Km after that. eg for Honda Civic 40Km-drain and top up 3L-50Km do the same again and then the next on at 90K.

if you replace your ATF regularly like every 30k km once, then no need to flush....

but for the case above you which says he/she only changed once during the 6th year :s22::s22: :s22:

weird, my car service guy also everytime ask me to change the ATF oil. show me it's dirty like mud color. so i just tell him change change lor.

then i ask him why not flush and change altogether? he say very expensive like that.

but now every single time i go, he tell me change the oil. like more than the amount if i were to flush at first.

drain 6th time liao.... not cheap also, was it around $100+ or what everytime.

It is recommended to change ATF. Though most manual says it is not required.

Change for a piece of mind. Not expensive to change too.

I change every 50k km.

Changing ATF at every servicing (i.e. every 10000km) is overkill. I suggest you start going to another workshop. :o

It really depends on what car you drive. Times has changed, so has technology.

For regular cars like vios, recommended ATF change is every 40,000km although some prefer to do it earlier.

For conti cars, and some (esp higher end) japanese cars, most are already using super longlife ATF and the recommended change is every 100,000km, while most do it at the 80k mark.
(When manual says the fluid is "lifetime", take it to mean the end of warranty period).

There is never a need to flush ATF, and manufacturers have never recommended to do that (just like engine flush), as forced flushing may result in damages.
Drain and fill at regular intervals is more than sufficient.

PS: For Toyota, the regular "40k" ATF is red, their ultra longlife ATF (lexus uses that) is pink.

The oil sump pan filter (gearbox filter) applies mainly for conti cars. Change everytime you change ATF.
For Jap/korean makes, never changed before.. and never heard of anyone changing throughout the lifetime of the car. I suppose it doesn't exist. Conti gearboxes are designed differently.
