When machine become faulty, it is possible.

A few years ago, I had bad experience. Thought it was faster to deposit at ATM since branch got long que. So tried to deposit a few hundreds, but machine decided to eat my money. So need to report to the branch and took a few days to investigate and refund into account, of course loss of interest.

From then onwards, I never deposit big sums of cash.

Wow! So it's true that such might happen :( i only encountered sam machine runs out of stamp stickers ended up eat away my $ without printing out my stamps. I have to call up Sam to report. Show proof to a nearby post office the next day to get a refund.

Another time is the stamps get stuck while printing halfway. I ran into PO to get the cs to come out and help me retrieve by opening up the machine. Trying to retrieve back these small $ is already a hassle. I can't imagine if is ATM. I will be sleepless..

But the thing is. Usually it'll ask if the amount stated is agreeable before it can go ahead to "swallow" the $. It is rather strange these victim actually click yes to let it swallow

I did not read what u posted. My case, I had not finished depositing, ATM just decide to stop processing and never issue any receipt and the amts were not posted to my account.

So never happen to my anymore cos I never deposit large sums of money for fear of repeat :s13:

2 years ago, l remembered at Rochor MRT, was withdrawing 600 at OCBC ATM to bring to MBS. Money didn't come out. Panicked. Checked internet banking, amount deducted. Called OCBC hotline, told me they will update me in 3 days once they checked the machine. I worried what if...
Still proceed to MBS with only 500 capital, in the end lost all.

Lol. The faulty machine saved you from losing the $500 :D

It's a blessing in disguise 😊

Can trust the story?

You are given a chance to acknowledge the amount.

He acknowledged and then cried foul?

If deposit machine has faults, I won't see shopowners depositing thick amount of notes.

Shopowners deposit money more frequently than us.

Just came across this article

https://singaporeuncensored.com/old-mans-hard-earned-1300-ate-by-posb-atm-at-marine-parade/

I have never (touch wood) encountered such thing though i use atm to deposit $ quite frequently. Has anyone ever encountered such discrepancy before?

This is disturbing.
$1300 is many pieces of $50 notes. Where did it go? If the bank said no discrepancy found, could it be the $1300 was credited to the next depositor's account? Hence the overall tallies in this deposit machine.

One depositor's loss is another depositor's gain.

Here's an idea: don't use cash. The just introduced "Fortitude Budget" happens to include government subsidies to help hawker vendors (for example) install cashless payment systems.

Cash keeps getting more and more icky.

if we accept that machines can break down then of course its possible, but of course the chances of it happening to you is very rare, maybe even rarer than winning toto. As they may have other contingencies put in place when the machine is faulty, but there is always the rare chance that everything is faulty on that particular day.

Once I topped up $10 at the MRT auto top up machine, the machine also eat up my $10 without any warning or signs. The station master also keep insisting cannot be after he opened up and check, in the end up another of his colleague asked me to write a report and sign, they investigated and eventually found out the machine did indeed eat up my $10.

Something similar happened to me as well. I just emptied out what was left of my angbaos this year into the POSB ATM, and it just ate my money and showed an error message with a phone number to call on the screen.

I went into the branch to complain, and they told me to call the number, while they marked the machine as faulty. They made a deposit to my account the next day. I really have no clue if the ATM ate any of my money since I didn't count. :( I count my cash before depositing now.

I handle machines so I will roughly know how other sensitive machines like cash depositing will work.

There will definitely be low level logs to keep track of every single process.

If the machine stops suddenly like for your case, it will be registered in the logs. That was why the machine gave you a number to call.

For the case if the machine works as per normal, depositors are given the chance to acknowledge the correct amount.

I have never tried to reject the acknowledgement. If you don't acknowledge, I believe the machine will count again.

And if you still don't acknowledge again, the machine will just return your money. All these processes will be logged.

So YES machines do break down, but as I said all these processes can be investigated through the log files.

For the case of this story, here are some key points:

  • Father is an essential work. Gets paid in $10k in cash.
  • Father must have acknowledged correct amount, thus receipt printed the same amount.

The logs will be able to capture this easily.

Machine accepted $10k and depositor acknowledged $10k but receipt and account reflected a lower amount.

Even the receipt showed the wrong sum. What could we have done?

So far no issue depositing with ATM, highest amount was 10k, split into 5k,5k, but in a single transaction. Now touch wood after reading this :s22:.

There is a max. limit of pieces of notes you can deposit into the ATM. I think it is 200 pieces. Same for max amount.

I am sure after the Cisco officers collected the deposit boxes from the ATM, the contents of each box are counted to make sure they are tallied. The sequence of deposits was also recorded so the bank can trace back any discrepancies.
