Why do some people use Atom CPU for server? Is its performance fast enough?

I thought people use Atom CPU netbooks and cloud books already want to kill themselves.

It is fast enough for what it does

Like your router uses a tiny ARM processor that doesn't need heatsink

And AMD Jaguar is happily powering PS4

Most of the time , it is about cost . If you looking for something powerful yet cheap , just go taobao and get those second hand xeons with mobo combo . They are about the same price for a atom SOC board.

I using low powered cpu to mine and farm eg 2030T (35TDP) and can use normal m/board.

Atom is too weak for devices that u interact with. But it's perfectly fine for a headless server, where its main purpose is just to service file sharing requests. Plus atoms have the added advantage of power saving and lower tdp. So u can afford to use a less noisy fan

I kid you not, but atoms, and low powered CPUs, have enough power to do server based tasks that does not require much computational power.

I'm using an Apollo Lake for my NAS and a Bay Trail for my daily.

They work pretty fine coz when i game, i just power on my i7

Server = 24/7 usage.
A regular I7 even at its most idle state, consumes around 45W occasionally shooting up to max tdp.
For 40W, i can power a Bay Trail at load + 2 Monitors. + charge handphone..
Run it constantly, and you can see the power bills soar......

Atoms are fine if you know what to epect.

I've used the first gen Atoms Intel A110 on a Toshiba 5.7"Notebook as a daily, running outlook, photoshop, websurfing, chat...etc, using Windows VISTA with a 1.8" 4200rpm spinning platter.

What would you expect from vista and a 1.8"4200rpm spinning platter. =_=

But if you know it takes 3mins to boot, you can time a quick walk to the pantry, make yourself a cuppa and start walking back to your cubicle..
So that 3mins becomes instant

Back then, SSDs were unheard of..
