Atom processor server

I see SuperMicro selling entry grade servers using Intel Atom processor.

Any practical use case for Atom server?

I thought if someone decides that he needs a server, he would rather go get serious Xeon-based servers instead?

If the workload is light enough, why not just get a budget itx or matx Celeron or Pentium box or Intel NUC instead?

Any thought?

Firstly, Atom boards from SM are meant for Gateway, file-sharing, security, embedded applications and NAS servers.

It is compact and low powered as it is meant to be up 24 hours. Eg, Atom C2758 = 8-Core and only 20w.
C2358 = 2-Core and only 7w.

Different SM boards have their key features, etc Quad LAN, 7x GbE LAN, IPMI, LSI SW Raid (can be used for freenas).

There is another compact and low powered Xeon series called Xeon-D.
Up to 16 Cores and uses only 65W.
Targeting Network security appliance, Firewall applications, virtualization, sd-wan and more.

It is not a one MB fits all solutions.
Different motherboards cater to different needs.

Which brings to mind whether these Atom processors used for servers are much faster and more powerful than those craps found in cheap netbooks or laptops?

I remember the netbook took 90 to 120 seconds just to boot up Windows 7.

Open up Chrome web browser with more than 5 tabs and it starts to choke and stutter.

Well I used to host a small website off a raspberry pi.. An atom server is perfectly powerful enough for small scale application

You need power depending on your workload. Small scale business running a small DB with a few applications and users can be run easily on an Atom server.
