Okay so to start off, gpa not that good, kinda horrible. Poly diploma in Aerospace Technology at ngee ann poly. Tanked hardcore for various reasons, 2.1ish at graduation. I was looking to study uni in australia partly for job and partly for pr. Was looking toward QUT, UQ, maybe unsw idk and the like. Not expecting exemptions given my score. Money wise cheaper would be nice but not too much concern.

Woops, english fail in the title. Please ignore that.

If money is not too much of a concern, mean you are a rich family, so go where study also can.

I mean like, got money set aside for overseas study ah, but not say baller. Don't really know the ins and outs of all these things anyway. Just kinda looking to see which unis i can realisticaly have a chance at getting an offer. Not much info i can find from singapore sites about QUT, and NP web supposedly show that min req for unsw gpa's 2, and UQ i see around looks like their reqs not that high.

No, i'm doing aerospace in poly. Not really expecting to make it into a decent aerospace programme. More looking into getting a more general engineering programme

what is more general engineering program? please kindly explain if U are not into aerospace.

are U done with NS? or no NS? wait another 2 yrs can change cost quite a bit.
U need to know what is in demand in OZ 4 to 6yrs from the start of your education.
OZ don't really have alot of manufacturing plants or places to do real EE work that I know of.

U may want to comb https://au.indeed.com/jobs?q=engineering&l=

UNSW better program isn't it? in general cheap things not good, good things not cheap.

Brisbane is cheaper no doubt

say QUT 1 yr is like sgd$55-60K.

Thank yall so much for the info. My general idea was to try to get into a mech engineering programme since it'd likely be not as strict entry wise then see from there. I have relatives who live near unsw area so quite nice ah if i can get. Wasn't really expecting it to be cheap, have a friend doing business in unsw rn so in that sense got some idea of the life there ah. Haven't ns yet tbf so economy will change by then. If was up to me i'd study uni right away, let's just say, not a fan of ns. My friend doing business not sg citizen so, lucky ah.

Potentially if i have the opportunity swapping over to computer engineering would be nice also. Father's in the industry and kinda started liking it more after the few required IT modules and some electives i took.

1st pt: why enter in as Mech when you hope is to do Comp Engineering.. U do know IT is more comp sci and not comp engineering right? IT can be even Info Tech kinda degree which is more management.

if U need a fresh start transfer from mech to CS/CE/IS will take a longer time.

2nd: why is friend doing biz not sg citizen lucky ah? tons of ppl that lucky in UNSW not like we talking about Harvard Econ.

finally there are more Info Tech/System work in OZ from my understanding. not sure what your dad does not looking from the outside and seeing what they do and getting your hands dirty different story. CS/CE is often viewed harder than Mech, or say statistically more ppl struggle in CE/CS vs Mech. U maybe great at it and felt it is easy, we do see such ppl too.

But really u may not really know what u wanna do. u should like a system which lets u do general engineering which allows u to explore rather than do this 6mths find that its not suitable and change, repeat it for 1 or 2 times b4 u get to settle down. OZ may not have such system at Uni level. if foundation program cheap u can blow you time and $$ testing water out on OZ that way.

countries that does it is like Canada and USA.
some Uni to look at base on your grades
ie

http://umanitoba.ca/student/admissions/programs/engineering.html
https://www.mun.ca/undergrad/programs/engineering/

or U could do transfer program
ie
http://www.senecacollege.ca/dcto.html

fun read on EDMW on Canada option.

I say he lucky because he don't need do NS and i'm stuck with it, kinda partly why i wanna go study overseas. I'm aware that fully IT's more comp science and the like but my rationale is that comp engineering might be easier to transfer too since i'm in the engineering sector in poly, or like software engineering. US not really an option unfortunately, for various family reasons. Canada might be an option but would need some reconsideration.

And like, transferring course in the first place's more of a "if possible" kinda thing ah.realistically still looking at mech engineering or similar disciplines.

Father's at APEC is all i know, I don't wanna ask so much about my parents life so don't know much outside that but he did do comp science ah fwiw.

Doing mech in uni's just the safety so called, doesn't have much to do with branching into an IT related degree.

From my understanding, you have to serve your full time NS before you can 'escape' to have an university education because your application to CMPB for overseas studies will be rejected. So if you manage to 'escape' to have an university education, you may charge under AWOL for failure to enlist for full time NS.

Mechanical can branch into Aerospace but Computer and IT is totally out from that relevant engineering. So it will be good if you think what you want for a career to focus on what course to study.

Read this up ( https://www.peb.gov.sg/html/pe_approved.html ) and chose one of the university from the list if you want to take BE (Mech) in Australia. If case it does not work out, you still can some back to Singapore with a recognized degree.

Yeah, not really expecting to escape the 2 years but hoping to at least get away from the reservist portion. I've seen the list, partly why i chose UQ, QUT and UNSW.

As much as possible i don't wanna go back to SG but anyway, branching into working in computers's not something super easy to do i'm aware, worse come to worst i could branch into it slightly later on, not so sure about that yet. Taking aerospace was partly to calm my parents worries and partly that if's viewed as a good course to take ah. Looking back it was a mistake but what's done is done. Have programming and IT background from several Np modules and O level which i'm hoping helps me a bit

Mech to comp engineering or comp sci to my understanding the “transfer” same. What is your idea of transfer? Do 1 yr mech change to comp engineering start 2nd yr? Or....

With comp sci if you not familiar with what he is doing how do you know that is what u like? Not sure if u experience this while u younger, feeling u like something but upon trying it out or knowing it turn off? Ie
Joe like to play games, game developers cool... tried programming and go too hard that’s not for joe.

If u do mech and work, how to branch to it later? Doing apps or contributing to open source while ppl relaxing? Slowly build a resume that way? If so u can do it now using 2 yrs of NS. Use that to apply to comp sci and no need to worry about “transfer”.

Engineering work many times have OT, u certain have the time to branch out? Even if u get to work Overseas if work really that relax great. But imho too many if here.

Should reflect why u did poorly in poly, can u turn around in uni to make transfer possible?

I don't really know what he does, i going off of what I experienced in school only, the IT and programming modules/subjects i've taken. Transfer i mean like transition fields between poly and uni, or find some other alternative route later on. Not so much change course halfway in uni.

I have a decently solid idea why i didn't do well, largely inconsistent work, ultimately fell behind and couldn't catch up. By the time i realised it too late poly wise.

Not really looking to primarily delve into games and stuff, like it's not my primary drive to liking IT.

Looking to work in Australia or wherever i end up studying for at least a few years if that helps, not so much take degree and come back.

its best for U to drop by IDP (RELC Bldg, Level 4, Orange Grove Rd) get some free consultation if U can change major from Aero to computer Sci/Engineering, U are not transferring. The terminology used confuse me.
with certainty U can do foundation option.
ie. (for example)
https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/programs-courses/

I am not saying U are into games, I am just making a analogy if you can read carefully.

finishing a Bach in Mech and applying for Msc in Comp Sci/Engineering can be more challenging.

Like, i said, not too familiar with all the ins and outs, sorry for confusing you with wrong terminology, clearly wrong on how big the difference transition vs transfer is. You said ie, so i assumed you were elaborating on your earlier portion of the statement. Given from your response it's an eg.

Tbf i wasn't all that clear in my motives for this thread, was initially looking to find rough ballpark info on acceptance for said unis, or maybe something similar. UQ and UNSW easy enough to find via searching, QUT not so much.

Thanks so much for your help though, one of these days i'll pay Idp a visit. Foundation's an option, though cost gonna play a bigger factor. Heard stories about gpa 2.1 ish no exemptions offers from uq and unsw so was just kinda optimistic that it wouldn't be a stretch to somehow transition and apply to an IT related degree from the 3 Unis.

GO8 Admission requirements are typically more stringent.
So with uni like QUT no worries they are trad less stringent than GO8.

Education is big biz for oz, 3rd means for them to bring in revenue
Staying is snitching issue, PM those EDMW oz immigrants they can give u some help on if it’s easy to land yourself on a job upon graduation
ie

https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/eat-drink-man-woman-16/should-i-take-up-australian-citizenship-5972508.html

Current trend is oz love ppl with experience.
Read up on if oz has a visa to allow fresh grads to hang around to look for job.
I know Canada there is one currently. Then again 6 yrs from now hard to tell
