1st pt: why enter in as Mech when you hope is to do Comp Engineering.. U do know IT is more comp sci and not comp engineering right? IT can be even Info Tech kinda degree which is more management.

if U need a fresh start transfer from mech to CS/CE/IS will take a longer time.

2nd: why is friend doing biz not sg citizen lucky ah? tons of ppl that lucky in UNSW not like we talking about Harvard Econ.

finally there are more Info Tech/System work in OZ from my understanding. not sure what your dad does not looking from the outside and seeing what they do and getting your hands dirty different story. CS/CE is often viewed harder than Mech, or say statistically more ppl struggle in CE/CS vs Mech. U maybe great at it and felt it is easy, we do see such ppl too.

But really u may not really know what u wanna do. u should like a system which lets u do general engineering which allows u to explore rather than do this 6mths find that its not suitable and change, repeat it for 1 or 2 times b4 u get to settle down. OZ may not have such system at Uni level. if foundation program cheap u can blow you time and $$ testing water out on OZ that way.

take note that the part about trying general engineering to see which major you like sounds good in theory

but in reality you are sorted based on grades in your first year

so even if you like a particular major but yr results not good enough then you wont get it simple as that

i remember one canadian uni website got show the cutoff and its scary as fug for foreigners

think it was university of manitoba and you need 4.125 out of 4.5 or something

Why is that not good in theory? ppl clueless on what they want can use that to test water. ppl who enjoy the particular major generally excel in those classes. It also gives some students a 2nd chance. One can get weeded out several ways, depends on preference. some uni sets low bar to get u in and has hard course to weed out ppl that way, is that simple? or U can weeded out from the get go which u prefer I gather. life is never so simple, simple is just any keyboard warrior.

As for Manitoba, their max GPA is 4.5 or A+. With mechanical last year was 4.13, then again its base on best 8 out of 12 engineering courses, general electives not part of the math unlike most Uni! that requirement is relax man, that U cannot do is a greater issue. International students generally no issue getting good GPA overall. most Singaporeans going to Canada and USA do pretty well. Double standards in Canada, well they protecting canadians, but if U do better than your peers getting a job upon graduation should be easier than your canadian peers. bad that its double standard but on the flip side its also good. Doing very good is a bad thing?

TS want do comp engineering ah? have a few friends doing that in unsw and they like totally have no free time and from what i heard from them is that its not easy. need to have some "talent" in you else rip. have a friend xferred from that course to EE because its too dam hard. and his smarter than me.
