Had been using Booking.com, so far so good, cos all pay at the hotel (in yen).

If booking ryokans, pls try to book direct. Booking quoted almost 100sgd per nite more for Kazurabashi hotel in Iya valley.

I had no problems with Agoda so far.
Have been booking from them most of the time.
They usually have the best rates and can also use their 10% discount code.

Went to their Facebook page and realized lots of complaints.

Agoda is cheaper for me when comparing several ryokans. Most travel websites like expedia, trip, booking are about the same. Work the same way too. Some offer more savings than others.

For those who don't know.
If you choose the Pay Later option.
It will be based on the exchange rate on the date of your payment + additional 5% fee.

So it's better to use the Pay Now option when possible.

If not for this thread, I won't know there is an additional 5% fee. Agoda CSO does not mention about this too.

I have previously complained about the amount I was charged for a room. JPY was going down from the time I made my booking till the time I was eventually charged for Pay Later, but I had to pay about $15 more for 10,500JPY. The same room would also be cheaper if I used my expiring Agoda rebate but I was no longer eligible to cancel and rebook. After expressing my displeasure on the incident, I was offered to be charged at my inital SGD booking rate. However, the CSO reminded that I should use Pay Now option to secure a better pricing in future.

The best is to book directly from the hotel's website in Japanese.

No need to key your credit card info and can cancel without fees.

And you will not end up missing or double bookings.

unfortunately, this generally mean a much much higher price then booking from the OTA. TS problem is only choosing pay later rate which ended up a 5% additional admin charge (not sure if he was billed in SGD or local currency as he does not seem to be responding to the question:

to make us see better can list the following ? :

1) Date of Booking + JPY amount + estimated SGD amount by Agoda

2) Date of Payment + SGD amount charged to CC

Actually Agoda pay now rate in SGD (for refundable bookings) are quite good. There is no 1% DCC. Also, when you cancel, u receive the money back in full. So basically, for the forgone interest income, you lock in the base rate. If the local currency weaken against SGD, you can rebook it without suffering from forex charges (provided no change in hotel rates). Agoda rate in SGD is quite close to the prevailing spot rate at any point of time.
