carry on..like hiking bag

Something around 26L is good if you are minimalist traveller as can go anywhere. For 40L is recommended you have a basecamp somewhere to travel from. As long size fits airline carryon linear dimensions, it can go as carryon.

I would go with 40l since it's around the limit for carry on. I just tighten the compression straps to flatten it if I'm not carrying much. my clothes are in a drybag, so that when I reach my accoms, I can just pull up the drybag, toiletries bag and power plugs and head out immediately with the essentials. i.e. water, camera and jacket in case the weather turns cold later.

also, the length allows you to stuff a full sized tripod into the external water bottle holder and secure it with the compression strap if required.

anyway, autumn doesn't say much. there isn't much variation in SEA, so you can travel light but temperatures can vary a lot elsewhere depending on altitude and geographic location.

Hi,

I used to hike and climb mountain often.

If you mean like a camping backpack ~1-2 weeks worth of clothing (including jackets) and food etc you should be aiming for a 60L backpack. Especially if you are actually camping you need the extra space for equipment. A 40L backpack imho is a bit cramped unless u tell me u are wearing t-shirts and shorts without bulky itms and staying in hostels and hotels every night.

I tried buying the larger and more atas brand like Osprey from Amazon before, in the end price wise inclusive of shipping, is very similar to outdoor gear shops in Singapore. Otherwise, if you don't mind brand, go to Beach Road Army Market for big and cheap camping backpacks, can bargain somemore.

Hope this helps :)

60L dimensions might be too big for carry on though. 40L generally is pushing the carry on allowance already. If full service airline like SIA, they may close eye but unlikely with budget air.

Watch the dimensions. As someone has already mentioned, 40L is about the maximum for a carry on. However, some backpacks can be long and narrow and the height could exceed the carry on limits. Bring clothes that you can recycle without washing e.g. 150 wool. If you can wait, Macpac has sales occasionally. The Weka 40 is a very good backpack. Here is a blog that might give you an idea of how much you can carry in a 35L pack.

The bigger the bag, the more things you tend to pack and the heavier it gets.

Don't go for cheap and big. Get something of good ergonomical design and is good for your back (support). It makes a huge difference when you are carrying a load and walking (a distance).

I agree. Unless its for work, I can get by for a week plus plus trip with a 26L backpack. The feeling of lightness during trip is better than being bogged down. Even cold conditions can do it with the same bag by layering. Whatever I buy there, just put into a supermarket cardboard box and then check in as luggage.

I swear by Osprey brand for traveling backpacks. I'm using Farpoint 50L (or is it waypoint?) with the main backpack 40L and detachable day pack 10L.

The trick to bring the 50L backpack onto the plane without checking in is, detach the daypack and hold the 40L mainpack as a normal hand-carry bag. Then carry the daypack on your back. Viola. Never had an issue with airline everytime I did this.

I have another Osprey Transporter 40L with duo function as backpack or sling bag. I can carry a day pack while slinging the Transporter beside me. This bag is also a foldable backpack, but it takes quite some effort to fold and unfold it.

I still have my Osprey Atmos 50. 10 years already. Light, robust and thoughtful design.

Agreed that 60L is too big for carry-on. Usually I will check in because by the time i pack all my camping stuff its too bulky.

While ergononomic / back support is very crucial for my long hiking and mountain climbing trips, if your main point is just to throw the bag in the hotel room and sightsee, the support may not be such a big factor :) usually the bigger brands with more ergonomic design are much more ex. A 60L backpack usually few hundred bucks.

Yes i also support Osprey. Using its 60L model for my outdoor hike.

Hope this helps TS!

I am usually able to bring my Osprey into the cabin as carry-on. In case I have to check it in, I have a duffel that doubles as a rain cover. The duffel can be used seperately to hold excess baggage.

Obviously don't wait till at the gate before checking if your bag meets carry on requirements. What you can also do is bring the bag to the counter on days you are free and have them certify if your bag is carry on compliant or not.

If the bag need to put sideways before it can fit the top bins, usually will be forced to check it in. If just nice can slot horizontally, they most likely will okay the bag.

Really depends on the traveller. Its possible to go anywhere with a sub 40L pack with advance planning.

Why the need for advance planning? No planning also can travel/backpack.

My last trip, i bought my tickets two days prior. My friend booked one night accommodation for me cos I arrived after midnight. That's all. Dont even know what i was going to go and do during the trip.

Woke up the next day, decided to be lazy and stay another day so extended one day. Only had lunch and dinner with friend, didn't go anywhere. No plans for the next day. The next day checked out in the morning, friend said go climb mountain so we went. Don't know where to go and stay after, end up checking back into the same hotel. The day after, woke up, checked out, took the bus to the city, had lunch, went to the train station, then decide see where to go and bought the train ticket.

Agree, not everyone can take confirmed sabbatical leave with pay. For those 20-30 day trips, nowadays can only do in between jobs or use no pay leave.
