Backpack for Trekking

Hey there,

I was looking around for places to buy 30l daypacks or those huge 60l bags but I couldn't seem to find any that were more affordable.

I'm fine with any brand, so long as it's not as expensive or an Osprey or Mammut since I probably won't be using it again in 10 years time.

Heard that Bonker's Link in Queensway was a good place to buy backpacks but I'm just a little concerned about the quality of the backpacks (recently had a bad experience with a fake backpack bought from overseas). Are their backpacks durable?

Also heard that beach road army market was a good place but nowadays their backpacks are imitation kinds. Is it true?

PS: On a side note, is a 40l backpack overkill as a daypack?

Generally, you get what you pay for. This is very true of backpacks. There's a chance that a cheap backpack can last you a long time, but there's also a high chance that it may fall apart during a trip. I had a no-name backpack pop a seam on the zipper during my travel. Luckily, it wasn't too bad and lasted till I returned home, though I had to be careful with it for the rest of the trip. I also had a backstrap on another no-name daypack rip right off. I had to discard it. Now, I no longer use no-name bags for travel. It's just not worth the hassle of replacing/repairing it on the fly.

My advice is to buy a branded but cheap backpack on sale. Sports Connection regularly has a small selection of branded backpacks on the cheap, for around $100. Even if you just use it for 1 trip, consider it a worthwhile purchase since your trip may cost you thousands of dollars, and you won't want to ruin it just to save a few bucks. After the trip, you can resell it for half-price and only lose $50.

Other than that, perhaps an army backpack will do the trick?

For daypacks, I use a Jansport Wasabi. Light, roomy, though a little lacking in structure. But pretty durable, and at 32L, spacious enough for most uses (in fact, I use mine as my main backpack. After I get into my hotel, I unload it, and use it as my daypack. Talk about multi-uses). I got mine from Royal Sporting House for around $50.
