Backup-ing iphone 3G Data

Hi All,
Need some help from u guys here.
Recently, I got an iphone 3g but I would like to backup all my phone data. So how do I go about doing it?
I tried googling online but there are simply too many third-party software out there. Are there any FREE software that serves these purposes? I came across quite alot but needs $$$.
So I need recommendations from u guys...
basically I need one FREE software that is straight-forward in the sense that whatever that appears on the iphone, such as apps, messages and other icons, when backup-ing data into the PC, it will also reflect the same (icons, messages, etc) when saved in PC.
Current PC OS: Win XP
Iphone OS: IOS v4.2
