Basic PC recommendation (Desktops vs DIY)

hi all,

i've been reading around and there's really an abundance of experience recommendations shared by users here. love this forum!

i'm thinking of buying for my bro a desktop pc for his new house and this is simply a basic pc for normal everyday use. no gaming needs whatsoever apart for online games.

would a desktop system from PC show suffice? or still going the DIY route be better (inclusive of monitors and peripherals)?

If he's not gaming, just get a basic OEM desktop. Dell will even do home delivery.

considering OEMs are priced about 600-900 (based on the price list of the last IT/PC show), budget would be in between that? the route of DIY is open to future upgrades but my bro would not be needing that as far as i can tell

If so, sticking to OEM is better. Monitor, mouse and keyboard can be provided as well. I don't think you bro would want to troubleshoot the pc if any problem arise. Haha

Around $550. Pentium G4560, 8gb ram, basic psu, budget 120gb ssd and 1tb hdd, cheap casing and windows digital key from online.

thanks again for the recs. now i gotta decide what i wanna do with my own current OEM desktop which is about 5 years old. i've been looking at other threads for those build guides and i've seen you also recommended some. using that as a base and reading up more on that.

the last PC game i played was GTA IV as i've always been more on my ps4 and regularly buying AAA titles on that console. will the dual asus 1060 3gb gfx be an overkill for me?

If you can list your specs, I can see what can be salvage. My concern is your psu and probably need a new one in order to support dedicated gpu if don't already have one in your OEM system.

Gtx 1060 3gb won't be overkill if you're running an i5. The graphic will be okay for this couple of years on full HD med-high settings for 60 fps on AAA titles. Older titles like your gta IV, most likely can max.

Looks good. A gtx 1060 3gb will fair well with this. Just send a pic of your psu. If it's above 400V then we can proceed to upgrade it yourself. Else you gotta change the psu as well.

Also, you might wanna add some case fan to exhaust the hot air generated by the gpu and cpu.

EDIT: after some googling, suggest you buy a 120mm fan, zip tie it to the side panel vent holes as intake. You already have a 90mm fan exhaust.

Power supply given is 300W only. A little dangerous to be honest. If possible, get a new power supply too. 400-450W will do.

i've never open this OEM before so i have no idea what is in used. currently, whenever i run lightroom, open alot of tabs on chrome, doing downloads, i can hear the fan getting louder and my system starts to lag especially while on lightroom.

another question is, if i intend to do a dual monitor setup (still deciding), do i need a whole revamp of the gfx?

GTX 1060 have no issue handling your dual monitor setup if both is only 1080p 60hz. Your com lag likely because of your ram is limited. Not sure if you have any more DIMM slots available. i'm not really that knowledgeable in DIY PCs, but correct me if i'm wrong, since the current setup is on a 8GB RAM, i need to swap out the whole thing so that the same kind of RAMs are used? or i can mix and match brands? i do need to check in the setup if the current one is using 2x 4GB or 1x 8GB.

currently using a single Dell 2715H monitor. based on specs, it's 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz. have not decided yet if i go the dual monitor route, to use both that model or change to a smaller size model but using two monitors. even considering just one ultra wide angle one. just entry level.

Ram can mix and match. They will run at the lowest speed in the end. (eg. 1 stick @ 1600mhz, 1 stick @ 1333mhz, system would just run it at 1333mhz) As long as you buy 2x8GB DDR3 1333 MHz you should be fine.

Open pc panel and check first. No point keep asking the ifs when you're not even sure what is the hardwares currently residing in your pc.

If you're planning to expand so much on monitor estate, I don't understand why wouldn't you just make another rig. Gtx 1060 can support a lot of pixel. But gaming on such high resolution is definitely not a good idea. You will still do fine with productivity works and day-to-day stuff.

Last but not least, if you plan to upgrade to a gtx 1060, your psu require changing as well. Running i5+gtx 1060 on a 300W OEM psu is NOT RECOMMENDED. OEM chassis have very bad airflow too and not meant to house a card like gtx 1060 or higher. Hence at a previous post I ask you to zip tie an additional fan on the side panel for air intake to help cool down the system..

I'm not trying to rude. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I understand you have your plan of upgrades. But I would like to suggest you to take care of your bro's com first. Choose an OEM com that can fit his needs. After which, when it's time to upgrade yours, you can ask for a recommendation here again.

This way, we would not recommend something that would be outdated by the time you are ready for upgrade as nvidia new lineup is coming soon.
