Never build one before. Current acer system already coming to 5 years old.
I don't game. But got lots of Full HD family videos which i plan to do simple editing and coversion for the grand parents. May be moving to 4k video editing using Panasonic GH4 camera.
After some googling, i think i need the following :
- Intel i7 (hyper threading - rendering video)
- Z97 chipset mobo (i think only about $40 more than H97 mobo?)
- SSD
- at least 16GB memory (higher Mhz better?)
- CPU cooling (going for water type. Dun want clean the dust from the metal heat sink all the time.)
- PSU ( need advise on this. What spec to get?)
- GPU (do i need? Or the HD4600 in the i7 is enough? If not what spec gpu better? Prefer nvidia).
- casing (midtower matx)

Thanks.

You only need i5 for simple editing unless you are rich. i7 is recommended for those who do rendering as their profession or youtuber who produce video on regular basis.

No you don't need Z97, a B85 will do. Z97 is for overclocking. Rendering or watching 4K movie doesn't require overclocking.

Higher ram speed does not significantly improve performance. 16gb 1600mhz ($180) vs 16gb 2400mhz ($380), you will only see less than 3% improvement.

If you are not overclocking, you don't need water cooling unless you are rich.

Lastly, what is your budget? We cannot recommend you anything if you got no budget.

Thanks for quick reply. With the original i7 spec, i was estimating $1700 $1800. If i5 and B85, can get around $1000? Thought will need i7 initially.

Water cooling still got fan and the radiator, dust will accumulate over time too. Instead of dust at CPU area, it will be at where the radiator/fan is mounted.

Meh. You overclock to reduce rendering time. Even my 4790k is struggling with 4k production from premiere pro. You overclock on a x79 or x99 platform to reduce rendering time further.

Thanks for correcting me.

I think it might be a better idea to see what editing software TS is using and then decide on a high end i5 or an i7 based on whether TS's video editing actually supports hyperthreading or not.

Did not matter since he going to edit 4k video next time :s22:

Planning to use cyberlink powerdirector 13 to do the video editing.
Cheapest watercool from Corsair is the H60 at about $90 from shim lim price list download.
Hope dust at fan and radiator easier to clean than at CPU area.
Most probably going for i7.
Will stick to the lower price 1600mhz 16gb memory.
How about GraphicCard and PSU?

Haha I am also using powerdirector 13 as well for subtitling production and yes, it will utilize 90-100% of your cpu when you render your output file. Even if you do not want to overclock, the 4790k is still a better option (even when you pair it with a h board) because its brother without that k is still a good 400mhz away lol. It depends on your budget ba but for productivity work, really more is better (for cpu) to cut down on your rendering time. 720p is still okay on an i5 cpu, but once you are working with 1080p, 2k and 4k resolutions, the time savings can really be substantial based on the clock speed (+cores and threads).

PSU wise, I would recommend 550-650 gold efficiency type from either super flower, seasonic or corsair ba. GPU wise, pd13 doesn't really utilize much. A 200+ or even 300+ mid range gpu should suffice, since you are not using your rig for gaming. Ram wise, 16gb is enough as pd13 is not a ram chomper. Haha it is different from premiere pro which with each update, I seem to need more ram lol.

*PD 13 ultimate is on BF sales. If you want to hoot, better hoot now. I don't know when cyberlink is gonna go full blown on subscription service like adobe. Every month's payment to adobe is more than my hp fees lmao.

Dont think you even need a mid tier gpu. An i7 oc will run faster.
No need gpu.

Get a msi z97s sli plus + i7-4790k
Crucial value ram 8gb x2
Wd purple 2tb for all your project files, videos, pics. Or get a 3tb for more storage needs.
256gb ssd for your softwares.
Seasonic x450 fanless 80+ gold fully modular psu
A chassis of your choice.
Lg dvd drive
Strap on a thermaltake water 3.0 performance

Since you want an i7, it shall be assumed that you are willing to pay $1700-1800 for an i7 system.

CPU+ Mobo: MSI B85-G41 PC MATE+ i7 4790 (519)
RAM: 2X G.SKILL PC 12800/1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 VALUE RAM (8GB) (196)
GPU: SAPPHIRE R9 280 3GB DUAL-X (285) (lazada.com)
SSD: SAMSUNG EVO 250GB (179)
HDD: TOSHIBA 1TB 7200RPM (69)
DVD-RW: LG 24X DVD-RW SATA OEM (25)
PSU: SUPERFLOWER HX 600M GOLD MODULAR (109)
Case: DEEPCOOL TESSERACT (65)
OS: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM (125)
CPU Cooler: DEEPCOOL MAELSTROM 120 AIO (79)

Total cost: $1651

Unless otherwise stated, buy at PC Themes, #04-15, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, get PC Themes to assemble for you for a fee.

Notes:

1) From research from Cyberlink's website, your video editor:
-Supports Hyperthreading in i7 CPUs
-Supports GPU based acceleration (Unfortunately, the latest Nvidia drivers are incompatible with Cyberlink's GPU acceleration feature and thus AMD GPUs are used in this system as AMD's drivers do not have this issue.)
Thus, this systems aims to enable you to be able to maximise performance with your video editing software for faster video rendering.

2) A Samsung Evo 250GB SSD is added into the system as the high write speeds of the SSD will help in saving rendered videos faster and cutting vider rendering times.

3) I am not sure how much space do you need for your videos and photos, do remember to upsize your HDD accordingly.

4) The Deepcool Maelstrom 120mm AIO cooler is chosen as it is much cheaper than the Corsair H60 and works just as fine.

5) ValueRAMs are used as what you need is more RAM, not faster RAM.

6) Got Mastercard? Consider getting the GPU, SSD, case and PSU from lazada.com on a Monday and get 10% discounts when you pay with a Mastercard. Do note that discounts are capped at $50 per transaction and it is best that you buy these items seperately.

Thanks everyone.
So, better stick to i7k cpu with z97mobo, entry level watercooler, gold rated 650 psu, 1600mhz ram, gtx750 2gb card, ssd.
Should be less than $1600...

PD13's gpu based acceleration is bull hahaha. Tested and proven. Any mid range card will do.

No need os and hdd as i already have.
Thanks for the infor on cyberlink software with AMD GPU. Since mid range gpu is about $250, then better get the Sapphire R9 280 as lazada.com got promotion now.

Why not just get a gtx750ti oc ?
Because as the latest Nvidia drivers are incompatible with Cyberlink's GPU acceleration, TS will have to specially obtain older Nvidia drivers to use any Nvidia card, not sure if TS would want to go to such an extent just to use GPU based acceleration.

Hi. I am not very familiar because never use before. May I know what do you mean when you say using GPU based acceleration?

I read from the Cyberlink website that I will benefit if I use a 64bit OS. And there's this "OpenCL" which can use both CPU and GPU power.

If I choose i7K CPU, 16GB Ram, SSD with 64bit OS installed, will installing a GPU make a difference?
If GPU is necessary for smoother editing and faster rendering, will the Sapphire R9 280 3GB will overkill?
