Shanghai 1st-timer:
- Tianzifang, Xintiandi
- walk from Renmin Square >> Nanjing West Road >> Nanjing East Road >> the Bund
- take ferry from Bund across Huangpu river to Lujiazui, take photo at Mingzhu roundabout
- go up Oriental Pearl Tower/ Jingmao/ WFC tower level 100
- shopping at Century Avenue
- Take Maglev to Airport (RMB 40/one way)

Book a Chinese branded hotel, most likely will allow you early check in
Are you taking those green trains? There's no flights between 11pm-7am and the flight is only 2.5 hrs

Thanks.
Edited my post to clarify that leaving from Beijing to SG. Not Beijing to Shanghai.
Most likely going to take bullet train from Shanghai > Beijing. May also consider a flight instead.

In anticipation of Golden Week, arrange your tickets and hotels early. Why don't you go for sleeper train, so you can get more rest and avoid airports?

The Shanghai Museum is interesting.
Unlikely for my wife to agree to sleeper train, especially when we'll most likely be sharing a "room" with strangers.

Hi beanstalk.. sorry to pick your brains again..

I am considering the sleeper train for one of my route.. However, I am hoping to be able to get in the same cabin as my family members (total 6 pax, 5 adults, 1 child). I do not mind booking either 1st class sleeper or 2nd class sleeper.
Question is, is there any way I can ensure i book the entire cabin? For trains in Europe there is an option to select entire cabin. However, I do not see this option in trip.com for China trains.

I have not tried for sleeper berths on high-speed trains, but for seats, selection is available via the official channel 12306.cn. For ordinary (non-C,D,G) trains, seat selection is not available at all, but the system will allocate seats or berths for the same order to be together, as far as possible. Needless to say, the earlier you book, the more likely you will get what you want.

thank you.
Seems it is not straight forward to get the seats I want.. I have heard from friends that the official chanel is difficult to use (sometimes down etc) and only can book tickets 3 weeks in advance.. Not sure if that is the best way to do it. Will look for more info on train travel in the other active thread in this forum..

Trip.com allows you to book in advance of the official channel. It is likely that gives you the advantage to get a cabin and 2 berths in the next cabin.

The official channel or app is problematic due to the identity verification requirement. Otherwise it is fairly useful.

You mean we get to choose the seats after ticket is allocated when using Trip.com? Or the system would likely allocate us the berths in running order?

The system will likely allocate the berths in the way you want, especially if you are early. I have not had issues in this aspect with their system.
I understand that trip.com takes advance orders (60 days) and once the official ticketing channel opens 2 weeks ahead of your departure date, trip.com submits the orders automatically and informs you of your reservation.

You will thank yourself for this decision. You don't want your maiden visit to China to be marred by crowds.

Select "Family Room" for Room Features in trip.com.
Trip.com is the international face of ctrip.com which is the biggest OTA in China.
Agoda and Booking are the same. Same owner. Same family.

Hi, just wondering, any idea if 7 days Inn chain in Beijing accept foreigners?
Trip.com says Guest from every country/region are accepted. However Agoda/booking.com says Accepting only Mainland Chinese citizens.

Is it safe to assume Trip.com is correct? Cant seem to find the actual website of the hotel online...

There are tons of 7 Days in BJ.

Some accept, some don't.

I won't go for a 7 Days Inn.

Thank you for the fast reply.
Funny thing is the different online agent shows differing policies for the same 7 days inn branch.

Reason why I am looking at 7 days inn is because I can't seem to find a budget friendly hotel in BJ that has family rooms. Most hotels allow for children at no charge but don't allow me to add an extra bed or do not have free cancellation policy.. Anyway will keep searching then.

I would err on the safe side.

I shortlisted several hotels with family rooms that were available before my stay in December and called to confirm if foreigners were accepted. I called a few Home Inns (Rujia). Not all the Home Inns accept foreigners. One that did was Home Inn (Beijing Xiaoxitian) where I spent a night in a family room ie 2 connected bedrooms and 1 ensuite toilet. Fit my budget, even if the location is somewhat far from a metro, and the room was somewhat dated.

My advice is to call the hotel to confirm if they accept foreigners. The prospect of being turned away at a hotel in the middle of winter was daunting for me.

Check their listings at http://www.7daysinn.cn . You may have to go into incognito mode or accept unsafe website on your web browser. Each listing should indicate if foreign guests are accepted. Call still.

Thank you. Out of the two 7days inn I had shortlisted, one of them accepts foreigners as listed in the website. Had also call them to confirm.

Thankfully I did a search of my other hotels which I booked for other cities and realised one of them dont accept foreigners.. Hence I had to cancel and find another hotel. As always, hotel booking becomes an issue as my kid ages...

Quite a pain, isn't it? Over the past decade, foreigner registration has been fully implemented. I used to stay at even 招待所 with no issues. You can look up other chains like Motai, Hanting, Jinjiang, Vienna in addition to 7 Days and Home Inns. There was some consolidation, so I am not current.

Crystal Orange is pretty nice.

There's a James Joyce Coffetel that just popped up in recent years.

Yes rather troublesome to book a hotel..
Will look at other options that both of you had given. Crystal Orange booking seems to open only 3 months in advance so I might look at it at a later date..

Anyway I guess one other way is to read reviews.. Now looking at Nostalgia Hotel (Chengdu) and it does feel like the majority of the recent reviews are written by foreign tourist.. so that at least is a good sign.

For Payment methods in China, I've linked

1) AliPay (International version i think) with my Revolut Debit Card
2) WeChat Pay with my Revolut Debit Card
3) ChangiPay (have topup-ed some money into my Liquid Account)

Will also probably bring 500RMB cash there, just incase.

Anything else that I need to prepare as contingency plan?
