That's not the way to start a hobby. You start a hobby because you like it, and you know what you want. Judging by resale value is not the right way to go.

Might as well judge by the number of items easily available on the 2nd hand market before buying?

What I meant was that you could get used lens at reasonable prices while you are still starting out and do not know what kind of photography suits you. So when you decide to give up the lenses, there won't be too much of a loss and you can buy the lenses that really suits you.

I would put it simply is that, don't get anything until you are sure of what you like. Start with bare minimum.
