Hi guys,

Currently I have a sum of money I wish to allocate as a fixed deposit and lock it up for about 5 years or more.

Are there any banks out there that offer attractive rates? :)

Chk out Maybank's Structure Deposit which guarantee 9.4% returns over 5 years which equal to 1.88% annually. Pls do your own chk on their t&c and the diff between structure deposit and fixed deposit before committing to it:)

Local fixed deposits all seem to max out at 3 years. For relatively safe and stable investments for 5 years and beyond, you might look for structured deposits, insurance products or maybe bank preference shares. They should give at least 2% pa.

The sum I have is very small, it's less than 50k, so I'm not sure if it's applicable to certain schemes

Just for info, structured deposits together with foreign currency deposits are not covered under SDIC's protection.

Yes, right on. All people has to take note of it. Also, if it consistently meeting the target. Bank can cancel the "contract" ie will become shorted then 5 or 6 years.

FD is much safer and secured by SDIC. If your amount is not big, whether it is 1.1% or 1.6% does not make much different. Go for a safe one and renew by year.

Frankly I think currently the interest rate for 5years is a bit low:( would recommend a year of FD. I know is quite troublesome to renew yearly but at least the money will not 'lock' for five years. But if that is your spare spare cash;) then no harm putting to save the trouble:D.
