Ok, I am and have been a Blackberry fan. Now I have had enough of it. The benefits of the BB (BBM, keyboard, battery life, weight) are no longer that great anymore.

I use Google Drive and want to use BBM with friends. That rules out any Windows phone.

I really don't like Apple devices.

That leaves me with Android. Now, I don't really go for the media/movie/photo multimedia features on phones. All I care about are:

Emails
Document viewing and editing
Messaging / Communicating
Reading the news
Mapping / Directions
Apps like weather, travel, translation, social networking etc.
Latest mobile speed e.g. 4G LTE etc.

More functional features rather than multi-media.

I also value sleek designs, light weight, thin, and metallic / smooth bodies.

So which phone should I go for? I dont really want to go for HTC One or Samsung S4 as the features would be wasted on me, and on my wallet.

Metallic/sleek/smooth bodies comes with flagships like HTC One, not lower end models. So

You don't really have a choice here. And until BBM is actually released for Android, best to keep to your BB first. It could be a piece of sh*t on Android.

It depends on your budget. Galaxy Note would be a better fit and cheaper than S4. For low budget, Samsung Quattro would also be good.

I suggest Sony Xperia Z. Glass is smooth and the design is sleek. The main gripe people have with it is that the viewing angles are not that good and audio a bit soft. That shouldn't bother you since you're not using it for multimedia consumption. The price is more affordable now and it is water resistant some more.

The only thing going for HTC One Mini is the front facing speakers and metallic body really. From the signs I'm seeing, it won't be that cheap anyway.

Thanks, yes, am considering Sony Xperia range. They're pretty good looking. Not sure what the value is of waterproofing. Not going to use the phone in the shower or in the sea, and most phones are built to withstand rain anyway.

Heard that the battery life on the Xperias is not that great though.
