Can anyone give me some advice on the best value upgrade I can do to my PC currently?

CPU: i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz
MOBO: Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
GPU: GALAX GTX 1060 6GB EX OC
RAM: 2 x 8GB Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz
PSU: FSP Aurum 750W Gold

Looking to get similar if not better performance for my pc, as I feel my CPU might be degraded due to age. Playing PUBG on similar settings as my friends but getting 40-65 FPS usually, whereas they are getting 60-80 FPS. Suspect it is due to my CPU as they are also using gtx 1060. Planning to reuse GPU and PSU. Anyone can advice for the best value changes I can make?

CPU could be due for an upgrade (and motherboard). It might be the main bottleneck and the reason why your 1060 is not performing to is maximum potential.

Have to know what processor they are using as well to have a good comparison to know if the cpu is the difference in the fps here. Can also have fps difference if at different places in game etc are you sure the fps difference isnt just because they are in a enclose or inner rooms etc. Usually in rooms or smaller places it can yield more fps then out in the environment or outside big environment.

One of them is using i5 6600k, and another using Ryzen 1600. Both got higher FPS than me in the similar environment with the same settings.

A ryzen 5 cpu would be more than enough for your needs, coupled with a B350M motherboard. You might want to upgrade your ram while you are at it.

Intel is expected to launch the new kopilake CPU sometime in October, though I doubt they will release all their cpu lineup at the same time. Maybe the higher end ones first (i7, aka, KopiGao). There is also the issue of new motherboard releases by various motherboard manufacturers which should be around that time as well.

Considering that Ryzen has been out for half a year now, prices are somewhat stable now.

Now, the performance of Coffeelake is still pretty much in the air and we havent determine the price to performance ratio of their new cpu versus Ryzen. It would be interesting to see in the coming months. If you can wait until october and possibly towards the end of the year, i suggest waiting for coffee lake to come out and let the dust settle and see which cpu is perfect for your needs and budget. But if you want to upgrade now, Ryzen is a good choice for you.

I have the same problem as you TS. 1070gtx on i5 2500k. 6 GB ram, SSD.

That game SEEMS playable sometimes. But there will be occasional dips to single digit frame rates even on all settings VERY LOW but view distance ultra. My friend with 1060 only can get better and smoother framerates, but hes using a i5 6500. So im pretty sure PUBG just hates 2nd gen intel.

Im glad that PUBG is so damn unoptimized. Finally gave me a reason to change my CPU even though it can run all other games with far better graphics than PUBG at 60+ fps, including Witcher 3. I've been waiting for that excuse for YEARS. Getting a ryzen instead.

Not bothering with Coffee lake since it is in fact, Kaby Lake refreshed, which itself is just like Skylake refreshed.

PUBG was recently optimised to take advantage of more cores (6+). You could get a 6 or 8 core Ryzen, or wait a few weeks for Intel Coffee Lake which has 6 core chips with (theoretically) higher IPC than Ryzen.

If I were looking to upgrade this month, I would actually hold out a bit for Coffee Lake because we still don't know if Intel will change their pricing strategy (in response to Ryzen).

view distance ultra.

you don't need to play on view distance ultra. You can still see enemy players within the effective range of any sniper rifle with view distance on Low. It's even better because bushes/rocks/trees/walls sometimes don't even render in.

It should be comparable to ryzen's offerings.
