Best wireless charging for iPhone 15

I highly recommend the original Apple MagSafe charger. Does what it says it will do, no frills and no need to deal with 3rd party.

But at home I also have a 3-in-1 foldable stand from MTech. I don't know how fast it charges, but it did okay charging iPhone via magsafe (or magnets), apple watch and airpods pro. Usually for stands like these, I'd use for overnight charging.

This ESR MagSafe charger should be the best of the best out there.

It is MagSafe certified by Apple so it should be providing 15W as advertised.

2ndly, they use their own Cryoboost Tech to cool down the phone during charging.
According to reviews, they managed to make the 15W charging mode last longer than even the original Apple MagSafe charger .
For Apple and other MagSafe chargers, it will reach a peak of 15W and then taper off to a lower wattage because your phone is too heated up to sustain a continuous charge of 15W.

I finally tested my Mazer charger ( Desktop non-foldable version).

I did this 3 separate times, just to be sure.

Starting points were 27%, 29%, 31%.

My test setup was a USB-C cable with power meter.


My Test Results

My consistent results were:

Max Wattage reached was 11W.

This was an initial spike for around 1-2 seconds only.

It then tapered down to a consistent 9-10W of charging for the rest of the quick charging cycle.


Other Magsafe Tests

There's another reviewer who tested the original Apple Magsafe Charger in similar fashion.

"When we inserted Satechi's USB-C power meter, we saw that the power spiked initially, up to 15W, but then tapered down to between 11W and 12W the rest of the cycle. "

Final Thoughts
From the other tester's results, we can see that Apple's Magsafe charging claims of 15W itself is a marketing gimmick.

It sneakily advertised Magsafe as being "up to" 15W.

It will then drop exponentially to a lower wattage (i.e. 11 to 12W) for the rest of the quick charging cycle.

We should therefore take the figure of 12W as the actual Benchmark charging wattage of a Magsafe charger.

The Mazer charger was fluctuating between 9 and 10W vis a vis 11 to 12W for Apple.
At the end of the day, a 2W difference is still acceptable to me.

Found an original MagSafe charger from Apple to play with. It can exceed 15-watt charging but from my testing you rarely see so when the phone is above 40+%-charged already. To make things more confusing, I believe it makes a difference between:
1. you start charging when the phone is at low-charge level, e.g. 20% and then you leave it charging, versus
2. you start charging when the phone is not that low, e.g. 30-40%

For the 1st, you will see it go from 18-19-watt then taper the wattage downwards to 10-watt around the 30-40% mark
For the 2nd, sometimes you see it directly start and remain at 18-19-watt even when it's already mid-30% charged.
It's as if the MagSafe charger logic is like:
"the moment I start giving out >15-watt, continue throwing out this high-wattage for a while, even if the phone batt is at a charge-level that I will not charge at >15-watt if I started from when it is low."
Convoluted I think...

I will say conclusion: even the Apple one will, on average, stay around 13-watt charging when the phone is <50%:








That said, even at 13-watt charging the back of the phone and the MagSafe charger itself gets hot to touch; I'm uncomfortable subjecting the phone battery to such high-heat charging for sustained periods.

It looks like, to me, they tested Magsafe from 0% all the way to 100%.

My interpretation is that despite starting from 0%, their test only got a temporary spike of up to 15W Max.
The moment the phone overheats, it will taper down to 11-12W for most of the charging cycle.

Another problem with trying to compare Apples and Oranges is that everyone's phone behaves differently.
We had that earlier batch of Iphone15 users who complained that their phones overheated most of the time whilst other users ( myself among them) had Ip15 which stayed as cool as a cucumber.
