BMT Questions

Hi all, I'm enlisting in a few days time and have a few questions (I feel quite dumb asking these... but just trying to mentally prep myself haha)

1. After lights out, are we still allowed to leave our bunk (specifically go toilet)? I have a bad habit of having to go toilet in the middle of the night, so if I can't I think I just have to hold it in :s22:.

2. I read up some post on how there's no time to wash clothes/shower so they just Febreze everything, flip a few times... so the only time we can wash clothes is admin time before lights out? I sweat a lot so I want to try shower and wash my clothes as often as possible. Maybe anyone can share tips on this?

3. When booking out, do we have to bring everything back? Or can some of the stuff be kept in the cabinet such as toiletries?

4. For the entire BMT phase, is there a recommended period most people follow to shave their head again (every 2-3 weeks?) because I think the hair need to keep short? And is shave again outside of camp?

5. Read that ziplocs are useful to bring into camp, but will any type of ziploc do like those found in NTUC or is there a specific stronger type that I should be getting?

Thanks a lot :)

1. You are allowed to go toilet during midnight.

3. You may leave some of your personal belongings inside your cabinet.

2. You should be issued a bucket, just wash every night so your clothes don't pile up too much. imo it's easier to wash 2-3 article of clothing every night than to pile all of them up and wash every 2 or 3 days.

Takes me about 20 minutes to wash and hang it up to dry.

4. You'll get to shave your head in camp every 2 weeks, prepare $2 for this.

5. Get the thicker ziplocs, those won't rip as easily as your thin sandwich ziplocs.

1) if you can’t hold it you pee in your bed?

2) there is time. How much time and how you manage time is another matter.

3) define everything

4) they will arrange barber to come shave for you.

pls dont encourage the wrong thing. a person may also die from chao keng-ing too.

basically just do what u can, while knowing your own limits.

Haha, I do want to grow and improve myself as a person, physically and mentally but like what you said, also know my limits. Just hoping the training is gradual, quite physically unfit. :o

(3) Sorry, was a bit unclear. Was referring to the stuff we are bringing into the camp i.e. power bank, laundry detergent, toiletries, the bag to carry those stuff.

Originally thought that on top of some of the items they would be issuing, have to also bring back home all the stuff we bring there then I would have planned properly and get travel sized body wash etc. otherwise can't fit in the bag during book out.

(4) Was unsure about this as I always see people maintain their short hair during BMT and always assumed they cut outside. Thanks for clarifying.

Read some of the older posts that say don't bring too many things because have to stuff into field pack during book out, so I was thinking how to even fit everything I bring in the field pack haha. Guess I only need bring back those non-essential items like clothes/shoe worn during enlistment and other items that I end up not using.

brother you sound very stress.... dont worry, just follow instructions, dont think too much, and you will be ok. trust me.

i will try to add on to the earlier replies by the above helpful bros.

1. yes you can go to toilet. just walk out discretely, dont chat or do whatever weird stuff. sometimes the sergeants may check randomly, if they see you, just greet them and say you want to pang sai or whatever.

2. yes sometimes it is true, depending on schedule it is hard to wash clothes sometimes. you may be too tired to wash clothes at the end of the day, sometimes you have to fight for hanging places or washing machine.

a few things you can do if really no choice:
-if not muddy, just put some soap powder and rinse thoroughly at the sink, just a simple wash for next days' sweaty activities.
-bring home and wash on weekends- should be able to stuff some in your bag
- wash your clothes during certain times when there is nothing on the schedule
- or use febreze like you mentioned, which is a good idea, if your clothes are not that dirty. or better yet, pour some talcum powder to refresh your clothes and help with sweat.

3. you will get a metal cabinet beside your bed. so you can lock your stuff in there eg toiletries etc. (unless they tell you to bring everything back for some reason). A combination lock is recommended. In any case, for toiletries, just bring travel size, amount which will last you til your next bookout. Not a good idea to bring heavy shampoo and soap bottles on your first day, very hard to carry and sort stuff out.

4. current hair cut arrangement i dont know any more, but dont worry too much lah. you will probably go together with a few buddies when your hair gets longer.
alternatively just do a quick $10 cut on a weekend. good for people who wants to keep it constant length throughout.

5. ziploc bags are needed to sort out your stuff for outfield into 'packets'. the details will be provided to you. eg pack 1 for uniform, pack 2 for toiletries etc. they are very useful to help store your own stuff as well or for personal organisation. eg wet stuff like toothpaste
no need to buy ziploc from ntuc. in fact you should buy various sizes, some big some medium, but not too small. largest size should fit a set of folded uniform, or a bath towel.
either buy from emart, camp gift shop, or SKP (google for locations in shopping centres)

take care!

if you have any questions feel free to ask

Thanks for the detailed reply and really helpful tips! Yeah, I think I'm quite stressed out over this too, just trying my best not to go in not knowing anything. :s13:

Didn't think of SKP to get the ziplocs from (have one located near me), will head there tomorrow to get a few.
