I suggest tat u take 海線 from kaohsiung to taichung to taipei. More scenic. Of course, the best will be taipei to hualien, taitung to kaohsiung back to taichung to taipei.

Coz moi like take train too. Got i 莒光號，think leaves taipei ard 9am reaching back taipei 9pm goes around taiwan. U can take that.
