Looks like you have tried a lot to have this fixed but no success. I can't really see any similar cases so this seems like an isolated issue. And the symptoms points to me a software issue, small chance this is a hardware issue.

If you have not done so, you can try this:

1. Do a time machine backup of your system
2. Perform an erase and install of OS X
3. DO NOT restore from time machine, setup as new Mac
4. Keep running software updates until it's up to date
5. Attempt the bootcamp installation again.

Important: Make sure you do the erase and install properly and do not restore your data, make sure you got the correct 64 bit Windows ISO installer file.

If the above steps still fails, I would bring this up to Apple Support. Apple engineers should attempt to capture your Mac and try to see what's going on. Basically you've done all you can to isolate the software/hardware issue.

may i know, can the partition of win7/8 created via bootcamp be undone?

which means, i use bootcamp to create the win 7 partition. later if i find it not as good to use, can I undo the whole process? return to win partition back to OS X?

You can use Boot Camp assistant to remove it.

Anyway in my case I've already had online chats with Apple support. Spoke to 5 or 6 people. In the end they gave up and said go to A Labs or QCD. :s13:

I don't mind getting a cheapo USB DVD writer but my question is whether I just need to copy the Win 8.1 ISO on the DVD or must I make the DVD bootable first?

you need it bootable, you can use The Official ImgBurn Website to burn the ISO to your DVD.

If this an issue with bootcamp, I doubt doing so will fix it.

the big question, have you done a CLEAN installation of OS X and test out bootcamp? if not, that's what I would do to isolate software/hardware. if issue persists after clean installation, balls in Apple court engineers to try capture the product.

Or maybe it's the ISO file you have is messed up.
