ur budget hard leh, unless u dont mind slow laptops for ur kids

typically i5/8gb ram/256ssd is the standard for a decent laptop but it should cost around 800 or more

600 can get like i3/4gb ram/1tb hdd maybe but HDD is rly slow and noisy after awhile

if the laptop is not meant to be brought out then maybe desktop is better

Or get an old refurnished 15.3 inch Latitude or Thinkpad.
Those should be rare though as businesses tend to buy 14 inch or smaller laptops.

slow or fast should be the key concern sia...if not use alr v pekcek then they will pester ur colleague to upgrade

amd ryzen laptops are cheaper but the battery life shorter. but if you dont mind that then can get amd.

but then again if you don't mind short battery life u might as well get a desktop

Refurb laptop from IT recyclers:
Dell Latitude 7440/7450 ~$350 to $400

Self-upgrade parts:
512GB SSD ~$110
New original battery <$100

if portability is not an issue, used business laptop running 4th gen or later intel

If you intend to bring it out, acer swift 1 has 10h battery and ips screen less than $500. topup a bit more for quad core n4100 version

If budget allows, look for 7th gen or newer intel due to 4k hevc video support and double the performance of n4100

Sub $500 used business laptops (with ssd) are a no brainer compared to new sub $600 craptops (laptops using Celeron/Pentium N series CPU). The only areas craptops win are battery life and weight.

Doing multi-tab web browsing alone on craptops become a chore, given the limited capability and state of modern websites. I would've traded the 6 hour runtime my 2014 craptop got in exchange for snappier day to day experience from a 2011 used business laptop anyday.
