Someone please educate TS that its build a rig/computer. CPU = Central Processing Unit.
When you say build a cheap CPU, means you want to build that square piece of technology that powers the whole computer.

I'm sorry I think only computer engineers can help you with that, you need to have knowledge of electrical circuits plus machine code programming to do that. And it is very difficult to do

you forgot the need to have steady hands to work at the nanometer level

how do u know how much power you need to run the rig?

Generally, all you need to do is check the graphic card requirements because thats the component that takes up the most power. So google the graphic card model. E.g. "Asus GTX 970" and see what the power requirements are.

Alternatively, you could google "Asus GTX970 450w PSU good enough?"

Tonnes of people ask these kinds of questions, you could probably find answers there. At least, thats how I do it. Overtime you'll gain more experience and you sort of have a feel for it. For an example, since the GTX 970 is quite power efficient, a 450w PSU should be okay. But you need to make sure that it meets at least the gold certification standards. If you choose a 650w PSU, then a bronze certified one will do.

If you choose the R9 390X graphics card, which is power hungry, then at minimum you should have a 650w psu. But all of these things can be done by googling

i think you need to be informed that to get the best out of an apu requires a higher clocked ram, which would cost you more.

gpu is still a must i guess.
now that youtube supports 720p/1080p on 60fps. i notice my frames dropped on fullscreen using onboard :-(

Really? What motherboard / cpu are you using?

Hi there!
I am trying to help my dad build a relatively cheap cpu. Both of us are new to cpu building so i would like to ask for help in what parts and brand to get.

He just need a cpu which can watch video and movies and also those facebook games and all. Probably ard the range of 500-600 plus would be fine. I have extra dvd reader and 8gb rams that can be used.

Build CPU? Today only Intel and AMD build CPU for PC. Need silicon lab etc not easy.. U have the knowledge to wire all those transistors, etc usually done by couple of hundred engineers...

Those without computer parts knowledge will call the entire rig as cpu. It's normal guys please relax....

Then what specific term would you give that? 'PC' is too vague, 'chassis' doesn't makes full sense. :s22:

G3258 i feel is better choice...... is the same haswell core as i3.... but i3 has hyper thread getting 30% performance gain........ the 30% is just becos of the 4 thread..... g3258 is 2 thread 2 core..... if facebook watch video, 2 thread is suffice..... there are locked g3220....etc.... but it just 10-20 cheaper.... g3258 can be OC'ed...... haswell core is quite decent as of now...... then there is APU weaker CPU performance but better graphic.....

g3258 2 core 2 thread, cheaper than i3 by at least $50

i3 2 core 4 thread.....

i5 4 core 4 thread......

intel onboard graphic is also suffice for non gaming too, but weaker than APU......
Intel IGP does fares poorly in gaming performance, but they are in fact better with lower CPU utilisation and power consumption with HD H.264 video playback.

No need to change mobo, just buy GPU only

[Mobo&Proc] Asrock H81M-HDS R2.0 /w i3-4160 - $238.00
[GPU] Zotac GTX 750 Ti 2048MB - $174.00** (Lazada)
[RAM] Reuse
[HDD] Reuse
[ODD] Reuse
[PSU] FSP Hexa 450W 80+ - $58.00
[Case] Coolermaster N200 - $61.00

[OS] Windows 7 Professional 64bit OEM - $28.00 (Reddit)

Total :- $558.00

[GPU] Sapphire R7-260X 2048MB 2048MB - $134.30** (Lazada)
If there is stocks..

Buy from PC Themes unless stated otherwise.

**Buy from Lazada App, Fri (POSB/DBS cards - 15% off capped @ $25) or Weekend (Citibank cards - 15% off capped $30)

I suggest TS to consider this but change out Core i3-4150 for Pentium G3258. Discrete GPU unneeded for time being. And get FSP Hexa+ 450W from Lazada App using AAPROMO code to slash $15 off. Chassis can also consider from Lazada catalogue and choose one that allows you to offset with another promo code. So you also won't need to lug bulky chassis home.

Can i ask my RAM i have now is G.SKILL RIPJAWSX DDR3-1600 2x4GB?
I read online, might not be compatible with the rig? Can i still use the RAM for the above?

Just get the motherboard and other parts recommended above with my suggested tweaks. Your father just need those. :)
