I would like to build a new gaming desktop but I am unsure of the parts to get.

Budget: Hopefully within $1.6k, but can go up to a max of $2k.
Usage of desktop: Mainly to game, watch videos, listen to music, surf net and do some microsoft office work. No video editing required. I tend to open several applications at one time, even when I am gaming (i.e, my game would take up 3/4 of my screen and I would either have itunes, chrome or even a video player at the side). So the new desktop must be able to process all the applications without much lag.

I am currently using Samsung UA32D5000 as my monitor.

It would be great if anyone can advise me on the configurations/components and price (and which shop to best buy it from).

Thank you in advance for your help! :)

I have researched abit and came up with the following parts.

Motherboard: Asus H170 Pro Gaming ($562)
CPU: i5 - 6600
RAM/Memory: Either Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400Mhz/CL14 (8gb x 2pcs) or Kingston Hyper - X Fury 2400 Mhz/CL15 (8gb x 2pcs) ($189)
GPU: MSI GTX 970 4gb Gaming OC ($609)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB ($139)
HDD: WD Blue 3.5" SATA 64 MB 7200rpm 1TB ($77)
Casing: Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid Tower ($145)
PSU: Corsair RM650X 650W Modular Gold ($185)
Software: MS Windows 10 Home (64bit) ($158)

The above adds up to quite a sum of $2,064. I am hoping to reduce the price of the rig without compromising on anything.

Any suggestions on how I can replace some parts without compromising much. Also, does the above components make sense?

hdd:WD 1tb blue $77
case:coolermaster mastercase 5 $169
psu:seasonic m12ii 620w $115
os:windows 7/8/10(reddit)$30

all prices not bracketed are from pcthemes. do ask around for price quotes and discount before buying.

Actually.. is there no need for i5-6600? I am not too sure about this, but just took that option for the higher ghz.

Very marginal difference in the extra ghz. If gaming, you almost won't feel any difference. Save the money and get better GPU instead.

Not really much difference, definitely won't bottleneck your gpu. Can even drop to i5 6400 and not much difference. Best to spend on a better gpu instead of focusing on your cpu for games.

ohh.. in that case, is my gpu sufficient? someone mentioned that for the psu that i have chosen, i should down my gpu to gtx 960 instead, or else i will face the problem of power tripping few yrs down the road.

600w more than enough for the setup, don't need to worry

Ram can trim to 8gb want save more buy from amazon, gfx card same thing...

Ssd also can get from Amazon. U don't need a Samsung, just get the cheapest available one (currently think most value ssd is adata premier550, 114 USD for 480gb)

CPU can cut to i5 6400.

Also note your master case 5 has no window at the side. Need to add 40sgd more for window
