Will be building a computer for someone who will require some level of graphic processing and 3D rendering (person is studying at DigiPen hence the requirement).

I am used to building gaming com but I am wondering if graphic processing requires a totally different setup. So far based on what I think is appropriate:

CPU: Intel Quad-Core to handle rendering
RAM: 8GB - 16 GB (leaning towards 8 GB)
HDD: SSD + HDD typical set up. Can I render in SSD and save in HDD?
GFX: Gaming GFX or a Quattro(sp) card? Gaming card coz its dual purpose but Quattro seems to be more of the workhorse (Nvidia seems to be the choice due to CUDA....)
PSU: Any recommendations to power the rig. Does rendering draw a lot of power?
Casing: Mini-ATX just to save space.

Total Budget is about $1200 (not sure if enough...). How would you fit it out. Happy and keen to hear your ideas!

For 3d rendering,

Cpu get i7.
Ram get 16gb. More the merrier.
Graphics get titan. Cheaper than quadro.

As for budget, that single graphics card is already way more than your budget.
