Hi guys,

I am helping my friend to build a new gaming computer to play games like overwatch, gta V, dota 2, battlefield 1, witcher 3, metro:last light etc. Intending to play at very high/ultra at 1080p. His current rig uplorry already. Do not need HDD and peripherals, need OS.

I came up with these list of parts but still cannot get it to below 1k.

From Tradepac, hopefully they can sell me at the listed price:
Mobo+CPU: MSI B150M Bazooka + i5 6400 (385)
RAM: Kingston DDR4 2133 mhz 8gb (46)
Casing: Tecware Alpha (69)

From Lazada with Citibank 10% discount excl shopback, capped at $20
PSU: FSP Aurum S Gold 550W (89.10+3)
GPU: Palit gtx 970 jetstream (342+3)
SSD: Zotac T500 240gb SSD (74.61+3)

Total: $1014.71

Just a few questions:

1) Any recommendation for OS since the free upgrade to win 10 is going to end.

2) Is there still free Overwatch with the gtx 970? We will probably get the GPU last, in lieu of the 1060 release next week to see if the gtx 970 will have further price drop.

3) Any way to optimise further so that the price can go below 1k? We are open to going with i5 4460 and ddr3 if really no choice.

1) just get a win 7/8 to upgrade it.
2) not sure, need to check with convergent if purchase online can get or not.
3) well, maybe asrock h81m-dgs + i5 4460 @298

You can buy the Lazada items separately and use discount codes for $10 (PRESTIGEYAY) + $30 (StdChart CC - SC30LZD) + $12 (SCOOT15). The additional $32 savings will bring total cost to below $1K.

If you are going to upgrade to Win 10, you might want to get your Win 7 soon.

I doubt your friend's entire rig went uplorry. Just sell the working parts and use the extra cash to upgrade to GTX 1070. :)

The whole thing never uplorry. But his rig is about 7 years old already. His motherboard indicator lights are red. Play dota 2 the computer will lag and randomly restart. He is lazy to diagnose so just want to get a new rig and reuse his HDDs. No idea what he plans to do with the rest of the old rig.

Do the discount codes PRESTIGEYAY and SCOOT15 stack with citibank 10%?

I assume the SC30LZD code has to be paid with a stanchart card right?

1) So win 7/8 just get from qoo10 or reddit?
2) I will go check with convergent..
3) Will consider the asrock h81m-dgs option. I realised that the B85 + i5 4460 combo is not that much cheaper than a B150 + i5 6400.

All codes and card discount does not stacks, only thing u can get is card rebates on online shopping.
Yes Scb codes require u to use a scb card.

1)yup get from either, not sure of the current market rates =:p
3) but im just giving u the cheapest options if he dun really do much upgrades and just need a discrete gpu with mobo that is one seems ok.
but of cus if he still willing to spend abit more, why not?:s8:

just a note on tradepac.
the pricing for mb+proc combo is more expensive when u dont buy whole set pc from them.

i just went there monday, they markup the mb+proc pricing from pricelist by +$18

This is normal across most shops. Pricing stated is for bundle purchase, instead of cpu+mobo separate purchase.

Careful of Palit GTX 970. I got horrible coil whine with a GTX 970 Palit before. You may google coil whine gtx 970 gtx 980 to get a feel of the extent of the problem. Of course, not all palit boards will have coil whine. But just to let you know.

Also, as you know, gtx 970 only has 3.5gb+0.5 porky ram. Batman Arkham already asking for 4.8GB RAM w PhysX all on. I played last nite. Lucky I have 6-8GB RAM. You might want to take ram usage into consideration. Elderscrolls, lords of the fallen, SoM (Shadow of Mordor), GTA, Tomb Raider can eat up to 6GB RAM for breakfast.

Custom RX480 (8GB) or GTX 1060 (6GB) is much more future proof.

Yeah I know. But heard of some lucky ones who managed to get tradepac to sell at the listed price. So I will go there and try my luck also.
