Hi all,

Just graduate not long ago, I would like to build a PC for photo & video editing, 3d modelling & rendering. I try researching for awhile and came up with the parts below:

MB + CPU : ASUS H97-PLUS I7 4790K - $687
GPU : PALIT GTX960 4GB SUPER JETSTREAM - $365
RAM : CORSAIR VENGENCE 1600MHZ (8GBX2PCS) CL9 - $168
SSD : PLEXTOR M6S 256GB SATA 3 SSD - $169
PSU : SEASONIC X SERIES 750W - $225
CPU COOLER : C.M NEPTON 280L WATERCOOLING -$155

Total: $1769 (all prices are from PCtheme)

Do you think these specs are ok or overkill? I'm trying to keep below $1700 since my budget are tight and I have yet add casing.

Any recommendation of casing with good cooling systems, heard need a good cooling system when it comes to rendering.

Storage wise, I had a HDD 1TB on my previous computer, so I think I can use it.

OS, Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor not required. Try to get get everything in SLS at one shot.

Need advices. Thank you!

why not wait? heard some Skylake boards can overclock the bus speed already.. and if also can unlock the multiplier the performance will be freaking insane.

For the above rig, SSD can change to samsung evo 850 250gb
PSU can change to lower wattage.. Even my rig uses less than 500 with 10 usb device plugged in.

Actually are you planning on overclocking?

And it would be better if you would state what 3D rendering programs you are looking at as well :o

If you plan to OC, you must get Z170. Only the Z170 can OC the non-K processors, at the moment.

hmm.. so 650W should be sufficient right?

The gpu can get 4gb same price on lazada

Just saw $335 in lazada (with shipping)

Don't think I will be overclocking for now but might want to get it just in case want to overclock in the future, and I realise H97 board not design for overclocking now I need to look at Z97 board. (More expensive)

For 3D rendering I will be using 3ds Max and Blender, Photo & video will use photoshop and after effect lastly game programming will be using Unity3D.

Do u know a highest speed cpu doesnt really game better if u have a lousy gpu , for example a i5 + gtx970 vs i7 + gtx960 . The i5 system actually win fps in gaming . Oh if u mainly is photoshop then ok

i7-4790k + MSI Z97 PC Mate @ 643
Coolermaster Hyper 212x @69
2x8GB Kingston DDR3-1600 @122
Crucial BX100 @129
Zotac GTX970 @479
Seasonic M12-II 620W @115
Fractal Define R5 @159
Total 1716

Prices all from PC themes

Ok i assume like me you want to overclock. I think you can get by with a Hyper 212x, which is a great value for money cooler. I can get clocks of 4.5Ghz on a 4690k, I think you can get a nice clock of around 4.3-4.4GHz if you are really looking into overclocking.
RAM no need so fancy unless you are aesthetic first like me. Normal ram can liao.
So here I recommended a GTX970 straight away. I am not sure if you will be using Blender Cycles, but I did a benchmark (BMW cycles benchmark) on my GTX970 and I got a pretty respectable 1 min 41s on Blender 2.74. The GTX960 would be like 40% slower due to the lower number of CUDA cores, so I think the GTX970 would be a great idea if you are looking at Blender Cycles.
I picked the Define R5 because it is a reasonably priced casing with clean design and pretty good airflow, though honestly decent airflow is enough for 3D rendering.

Ya, was thinking the same thing now whether to up to gtx970

i7-4790k + MSI Z97 PC Mate @ 643

Crucial BX100 @129

Fractal Define R5 @159
Total 1716

i7-4790k + MSI Z97 PC Mate @ $646
i7-4790 + MSI H97 PC Mate @ $623 (No overclocking, so getting a H97 board)

Not sure will I overclock, but I heard that overclocking will bring up performance 3~5%, paying $23 for overclocking. Hmmmm...

I doubt you will see any difference with a overclocked 4790K. I run mine underclocked to 3.6 GHz.

Hmm.. then i could save quite a bit in the cooling if i go for non "K"

Hmm based on the Blender Benchmark on my CPU (i5-4690k overclocked to 4.5GHz)

CPU (OC): 6.02.67
CPU: 6:38.75

That 30 second difference in speed, whether it is worth it for you it is up to you...

if you don't want to OC, maybe can get a Skylake system...

i7-6700 + MSI B150M Bazooka @616
2x8GB Kingston DDR4-2133 @156

Save 62 dollars for Skylake lol

LOL, Idea! If I'm not going for OC then I might as well go for 6700.

Thanks will think about it.
