Building a new desktop for image editing

Hi all, I need some help on hardware recommendations to build a new desktop for image editing

Mainly I'll be using my desktop for image editing running cs6 and lr4, downloading stuff, movies and Internet and stuff

Currently I'm using a mbp, I'm starting to find it lag ready.

Please give me some advice

Okay okay sorry sorry haha, all the while I have been using laptop, so the accessories is pretty much settled

Anyway my budget is maybe at abt 2k, I'm not carrying anything over cos currently I'm using MacBook Pro,

I would like to have a ssd?i supposed it will help ease my desktop in running the programs

Please advise me I'm not very experienced in hardware

Since its for photography use, you probably would want to look for a rather colour accurate and high gamut monitor for the best colour reproduction. I personally don't have a candidate in mind though - not familiar in this area.


For the graphics card, you would probably want an AMD based one.
Since, CS6 pretty much dumped proprietary CUDA from Nvidia. THey artificially capped CUDA performance on Kepler GeForce too much that it performs anywhere from less than, equal to, or slightly more than (in rare cases) the last Gen Fermi or GTX 5XX cards, to force people to buy Quadro professional cards.

A number of developers see this move as a negative action and moved on to OpenCL, open standards, multiple platforms which is the current trend. Adobe being one of them, don't want to be handcuffed. As of CS6, the latest Mercury Graphics Engine utilises OpenCL and has divorced CUDA from Nvidia. AMD has huge advantages in OpenCL. All CUDA proprietary components now also utilise OpenCL.

Since AMD hasn't done anything really negative to the general purpose computing related performance of Radeons, Radeons are still rather balanced cards that can handle non-gaming workloads pretty well. While Nvidia's GeForce on the other hand is only a pure gaming card. As such, Radeons costing a couple of hundred bucks stand as cheap alternatives to Quadros and FirePros costing over a thousand if you think you don't need to go to the extent that you need a professional GPU.

I see. Got use Mercury Graphics Engine bo? Both OpenGL and OpenCL performance wise should AMD better iirc. But both should work fine I suppose.

Try get as much ram as possible and a fast hard disk (SSD) as scratch disk for CS and LR

Intense video/Photo processing requires more CPU power.. Layman term: The more cores the better.. And extra threads make use of hyperthreading tech to "bluff" the cpu into thinking it has more cores than it has physically..

For gaming, some games utilizes quite a bit of CPU power too.. But currently, 4 cores is enough to play all games.. Therefore, i5 with four cores is more than enough at the moment.. Gaming relies more on graphics card for rendering..

If you wanna know my opinion, AMD for video/photo processing while Nvidia for gaming.. At least it's my basic rule of thumb..

if u are encoding and rendering full HD video..u prob need a i7 plus 32gb ram plus a large capacity SSD...that ish for the pros....
