Just how much money do I need?
Motherboard need as many SATA ports as possible
Wireless connectivity is not needed.
Monitor can run on iGPU
Processor I think single core is enough? I might be wrong though.

Or is it cheaper to buy a NAS, even though I don't need the network features?

Not sure about storage pcs and NAS.. But in my 2 cents worth of opinion, stability is more important than performance when compared to gaming pcs..

So you might wanna look at mobos/cpus(Xeon?:s13:) suited for these type of operations..

Aren't those server grade stuffs? I just want a basic one with RAID 1 that's all. Should be more than enough to protect my data

2 bay NAS? like that off the shelf NAS tends to be of a better price... can try starting with the D-Link DNS320L first, cheap cheap $99 only with decent performance and RAID1...
