Hello everyone.

Building a gaming rig for my bro. Built a gaming rig for myself in Dec 2013 with this config:

CPU & Mobo: MSI B85M G43 + i5-4570 ~ $356
Ram: Adata 1600mhz value ram 8GB @ $85
SSD: Plextor M5P 128GB @ $159
HDD: Seagate 2TB @ ~$117
GPU: Gigabyte R9 280X OC @ $445
PSU: Superflower HX600W @ $129
Case: Fractal Design R4 @ ~ $109
OOD: Samsung DVDRW @ 21

the prices listed are those i paid at that time (dec 2013). Totoal cost was about 1.3k i think? cant exactly remember.

Anyway, now I'd like to build a good gaming rig for my bro. Budget about 1.5-1.7k including monitor, mouse, keyboard and Windows.

CPU & Mobo: MSI B150M Gaming M3 + i5-6500 (price and/or alternative recommendation?)
Ram: 8GB (price and recommendation?)
SSD: 240-256 GB (price and recommendation?)
HDD: 2TB 7200rpm (price and recommendation?)
GPU: MSI GTX970 4GB Gaming (price and reccomendation? I presume this is comparable to R9 390 8GB. Which one should I choose?)
PSU: recommendation?
Case: I prefer a good solid case like Fractal Design R4 perferably with a window at the side so that my bro can admire all the nice stuff inside.
OOD: DVD RW is fine. price and recommendation.
Monitor: 23" and 1080p. Any recommendation with price will be appreciated.

KB and Mouse i'll just buy myself. Windows key i'll buy from reddit.

Do let me know if you need any other information. Thanks!

Buy a 144hz monitor.

Recommend benq xl2430T 144hz gaming monitor.

I bought from qoo10 when there is the $100 off coupon. So item cost $468. Monitor from videopro

Cheaper alternative is the benq xl2411z..with coupon will be $388.

U need to state the full T&C. $100 off min $500 spending and not just $100 off coupon with no min spending.

why do people seem to be against nvidia gtx 970?

Also, the new polaris/pascal GPUs are coming out this year. advisable to wait for them?

Also, what PSU should I go for? 620W?

3 years ago when I built my own gaming rig, I hadn't even heard of Zotac. Only knew about Asus, Gigbyte, MSI and Asrock. Are Zotac GPUs any good?

I don't think anyone is against GTX970. Just that I feel R9 390 8GB is a better buy. ITs slightly faster (much faster in DX12) and its 8GB.

PSU, maybe Seasonic 620W M12 II.

Reason probably is because nvidia have driver issues with recent updates, 2nd is the directx 12 with current new amd which is already a directx 12 comparability, lastly if u dun mind waiting for it, that will be the best.

well depends on which build u go and depends on ur gpu as well as other prephails u goona install (extra ssd/hdd + other deisgn/decrote to the case) but under normal pc game 500~620W should be fine.

Zotac gpu for now seems the best bang for bucks as they provide u with 5 years warranty as compared to others. u want a better cooler will be msi and btw asrock, i dun think they have gpu, even if have probably u need to outsource. cos i dun see them locally.

ok thanks so much for answering all my questions! I think I know pretty much what to get.

My last question would be regarding where to buy. I bought all my stuff from tradepac last time but I don't see anyone recommending to buy from there anymore. most people seem to be getting the stuff from lazada. Any reason why?

Lazada because its cheaper. If you want to get in SLS. I recommend PC Themes look for Yilong.
