Hi all,

Ive been looking for a second hand car. Naturally there are a lot of dealers or listing on the internet. Just curious what are the procedure for securing a second hand car, i.e. when going for viewing, deposit etc, confirming the car - dp, loan, insurance road tax carpark etc.

Granted, its my first Car purchase if i were to make one, but would like to know some of the general tips and info, or underhand methods second hand car dealers may throw. Im looking into a second hand car, probably left 1 year or coe 10 years car. Heard alot about deposit, lemon cars, or even scams around the internet. Would appreciate kind comments from the gurus here. Basically some good info to help me on a lookout from a second hand dealer.

Thank in advance.

1. Lock it in that car model you looking at. Gather all that model availability for sales.
2. Go down to each dealer where the car is listed for sale.
3. Test drive a few.
4. From the trips you visited, you will learnt the pricing each dealer offers. Keep it and do not commit anything.
5. During test drive, look/ hear for adnormal sound, oil stains. Get them to give you a best price. Warranty, grooming, admin fee.
6. The info gathered during your trips to various dealets, come back and do a comparison.
7. Once you think that model by A dealer good to go, head down to that dealer and nego.
8. If nego till cant meet your expectation, move on to next dealer.

Good luck!

Make sure after the payment.. They do the LTA car ownership transfer to u. This can be done on the spot immediately thru singpass. No such thing as LTA office not open and cannot do transfer.

First look for friend or relative who can advise and help you through the process.

Dealers are pro and sell cars for their living. So you need someone experienced with you. Can be overwhelming.

Two scenarios when to walk away from the dealer:

  1. The dealer does not allow test driving of the car
  2. The dealer does not want to send the car from used car evaluation

If getting PARF car with less than 1 year lifespan or COE car, point 2 is moot I suppose.

Point 2 can be a lure if dealer agreed to do that. TS could be green horn on this.
Unless send to trusted workshop that TS knew. To those evaluation center is a waste of time and money. Personally, i dun trust them.
Having said this, all are conducted at point of checking only. Today all goes well, does not mean well for next day.
To get over and have peace of mind on that day of purchase, then go ahead with this evaluation.

From my observation, 2nd hand car depreciates same rate as new car, is it still worth to get 2nd hand?

Don't fall for admin fee , gst , etc ********.

Ask them for nett price. Because nett price is final paying price which you use to compute do depreciation.

Negotiate on the loan and car insurance also. It either has to be same or better than dbs bank.

Best is still being a relative or friend who is experienced to follow you.

Always bring the car to own workshop to inspect. Got to check if got insurance claims , major damage , etc.

2nd hand car is for those who doesn't want too big of a financial commitment. If you want to drive long term then get a new car, it's not worth to buy 2nd hand car for long term driving.

Or maybe can consider bringing to your trusted workshop to give a quick check. But again I personally think buying second hand car is really at that point of time you check is okay, quite hard to “guarantee” it will not have any problem. That said I think can go with trusted brands like Toyota and Honda? Like the Altis for Toyota which is so popular for fuel consumption and reliability. I personally also bought a renewed 5 years COE car at depreciation of $6500 to test.

Mileage clocked - Rollback tampering is very common for used cars unless sold by those in-house dealers from ADs. Expect annual mileage to be 15-20k a year. Anything below 10k a year is hard to believe unless is 2020 year where most people worked from home.

Number of past owners - stick to 1 or 2. Don't bother with any higher amount unless is coe cars.

If you are paying in cash then is easy to get a win win situation with a private seller. If course you must have some knowledge of cars. Watching YouTube is a good start for assessing a 2nd hand car.
