Buying a secondhand GPU

Hi all,

My GPU just died and I am thinking of just buying a secondhand GPU from carousell or from the forum here.

I wonder if it is recommended to get a secondhand GPU cos I wouldn't know if it was previously used for mining and if there will be issues with its performance in the long run? Is there anything else in particular that I should look out for or take note before buying?

I am looking at a GTX 1060. Average price on carousell seems to be around S$180

Get zotac card with warranty. Zotac card usually have 5 years warranty so you'll be safe even if the card go kaput after a while.

Zotac is 2+3 yrs. The user need to register within 14 days to get the extra 3 yrs. If he never, then the Zotac card only have 2 yrs warranty.

1 of the tell tale sign is the badly corrosion of the heatsink if its used for BC mining.

Yes, generally it is great value to get it second hand especially if there is warranty. There is nothing much to worry about. However, you need to know the correct price of the card. Most sellers would want to sell it as high as possible close to the retail price but the realistic second hand value will be less. For your case, which model is the GTX 1060? 3gb or 6gb version? I bought a 3gb version for 95 bucks recently and I thought it was a good price. Hence, a 6gb version should realistically cost 130-150. $180 seems a bit high to me even our brain tells us that it is a huge discount from retail. Second market is really really good value if you know the price.

If the seller has more than one or two GPUs to sell, the cards were probably used for mining.

If there is rust (not merely oxidation), don't bother as it shows that the card was not properly maintained.

I prefer finding deals with mined cards... Cheaper as they are usually clearing multiple cards. Bought a 1080ti, 1070 this way..

They dont have emotional attachment to the card unlike single cards sellers... The receipt of the 1080ti guy had around 12 1080ti in one receipt

If no receipt and they claim still got 1 year warranty how? Anyway to verify or check if can RMA if any problems?

If no receipt then will be based on manufacturing date of the card. If is those zotac or palit card have to check if they got register warranty or not. If never register most likely no more warranty left because only 2 or 3 year warranty only.

A RX 570 8GB is just S$169 brand new on PCThemes.

There is a lot of ppl selling mining graphics card on carousell. I am sure they are buying in bulk from somewhere and reselling for profit on carousell. Means they are getting it much cheaper.
I wonder where is the source of their supply?
