Buying / Building Windows XP PC

Hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase / self-build a PC that can support Windows XP (it is old, I know).

Specs has be preferably
1) Intel I3/I5
2) Minimum 1 GB Graphics card with HDMI/VGA
3) SFF casing

Question is:

1) can I just buy any current off-the shelf PC and install Win XP?
2) can Intel I3/I5 support Windows XP?
2) if not, is there any shop I can buy legacy but new hardware to that support Windows XP

I think you will definitely have to look up the second hand market. Recent hardware are already dropping support for Win 7, not to mention Windows XP. Any reason why you can't use a newer OS? There is no more support for Win XP if I am not mistaken, so there could be issues in terms of security and driver support.

The reason for still using the Win XP is that the PC will be part of system that works only with Win XP. There are no plans in the short term to change the system.

I will have to use this setup for the time being.

In this case it is likely that it also requires older hardware.

There will be people willing to donate old computers to charity, instead of donating the system to organizations which some deem controversial, why not buy from them and donate the cash.

Install Win8 or Win10. Run VMWare Workstation/Player install Windows XP.

I have a Dell workstation running Win XP in laboratory at work. The main function is running Fluke METCAL version 7.2 to do calibration work. Very costly to upgrade Fluke METCAL software to support Win 10.

I think the last intel CPU that support Win XP is
3rd Gen Ivy Bridge.

So I suggest you get those refurbished i5-3470 PC and install WinXP on it.

For home use or work use?
If work use, consider get a workstation than
install VMWare like some have mention.

Support for Windows XP have been drop not to mention
Win 7 also.
Even if you can buy newer hardware and install Win XP.

There will be few key issues:
1) No XP driver for chipset, graphic and many other things.
Thus the system may not only be slow but rather unstable
since there is not driver.
2) Newer hardware works best on Windows 10
Windows XP can work but you may have limited functionality.

Either source for a workstation than install VMWare with Windows XP
or source for older hardware that supports Windows XP.
SLS should still have such hardware so do check them out.

At your own risk bah.
Maybe no drivers for the MOBO.

Your main problem would be drivers for the MB. Win XP does not have GPT HDD support or native AHCI so you will need to slip-stream AHCI drivers into the Win XP ISO unless you want to use PATA/IDE drives.

CPU - up to Ivy Bridge
MB - up to P67 chipset

It's fine to use a second-hand CPU. MB is better new but can be really hard to find.

Proprietary industrial software are not like your PC games, they can be extremely slow to move to newer O/S support. I have clients still using Windows98 for their CNC machines with proprietary software designed for the controller.

No issue, get 2 units of branded used system of the same model, you are good for at least 5 years down the road with minor repair work.
